SJK(C) Sam Chai Leads the Way for Greener Schools Through Solar Energy
Malaysia100 commends SJK(C) Sam Chai for setting the benchmark in embracing renewable energy and demonstrating how schools can become catalysts for environmental sustainability.
The launch of the rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) system at SJK(C) Sam Chai by YB Wong Kah Woh, Deputy Minister of Education, and YB Howard Lee, Member of Parliament for Ipoh Timor, marks an important milestone in advancing green initiatives within Malaysia’s education, demonstrating a shared commitment between government, industry and community to accelerate the adoption of clean energy in schools.
This initiative is aligned with Malaysia100’s vision of envisioning the Malaysia we want to build over the next 100 years, which is a nation that is sustainable, innovative and prepared for future generations.
The solar PV system at SJK(C) Sam Chai is expected to generated 91,000 kWh of clean electricity in its first year of operation. Over the 20-year agreement period, the school is projected to achieve electricity cost savings of approximately RM382,993, while reducing its dependence on conventional energy sources and contributing towards a greener future.
Malaysia, blessed with sunshine throughout the year, makes solar energy one of the country’s greatest natural resources. By harnessing rooftop solar energy, schools can reduce electricity costs, lower their carbon footprint, and redirect long-term savings towards enhancing educational facilities, improving learning environments, and investing in student development.
Following the evolution of the Net Energy Metering (NEM) 3.0 framework, zero-capital-expenditure (zero-capex) solar solutions remain available through current implementation models. Malaysia100 remains committed to expanding this initiative throughout the state of Perak, actively facilitating partnerships and agreements between schools, GSPARX, a subsidiary of Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and TNB itself to enable more education institutions to adopt zero-capex rooftop solar solutions.
The successful implementation at SJK(C) Sam Chai demonstrates how collaboration between the education sector, government agencies, and industry partners can deliver better environmental and economic outcomes. Malaysia100 welcomes school administrators, school Board of Governors, Parent-Teacher Associations and education stakeholders who are interested in exploring solar energy solutions to engage with us and begin discussions on the implementing similar projects at their schools.
