March last year, while working on Home at Rifle Range Flats Exhibition, we were introduced to Uncle Kong through his son Tiger. His Kwang coffee stall, became our regular resting spot after every interview, and his Hor Kai Sai, the one thing that kept us going.
Over time, we became more than just visitors. Uncle Kong generously offered his own home as part of our exhibition, and those afternoons spent in his flat felt like a quiet glimpse into life in Rifle Range.
He once told us he would keep the coffee stall running for as long as he could, because otherwise, where would the neighbours go?
We thought we'd see him again on our next visit. But a few days ago, we heard that Uncle Kong had passed away peacefully.
It hasn't quite sunk in. But we're grateful we got to know him, and grateful we got to document this, while we still could. His son will keep Kwang coffee stall going, and in that way, Uncle Kong's light stays on.
Thank you, Uncle Kong. We will miss you.
