Father of Penang's Silicone Valley. How did he manage to get Intel here?

In 21 years, Penang's economy grew nearly 60 times - the road that Penangers drive today bears his name.
In our Light of Malaysia series, we have written about P. Ramlee and Wulliande, all of which are characters from Penang.
This is the man who made Penang the Penang that it is today.
His name is Lim Chong Eu.
Penangians gave him a prestigious title - "father of modern Penang." 🌹
If you've ever been to Penang, drive down the long and beautiful Tun Dr Lim chong Eu Expressway, which is by the sea, that road is his name.
The man who changed a city was, in his original capacity, a doctor.
I. He is the son of a famous doctor and a field doctor.🌹
Lim Chong Eu was born in Penang in 1919. My ancestral home is Tong'an, Xiamen, Fujian.
His father, Lim Ayu Long, was a renowned doctor in Penang.
He studied at Penang Free School. In 1937 he took a Royal Fellowship and travelled to England - and in 1944 he earned a degree in surgery at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland.
A child of a doctor's family, he could have returned to Penang, safe and secure, to become a surgeon.
But he didn't.
After graduation, he went to war-torn China. During World War II, he served as medical director at the naval headquarters of the National Revolutionary Army and as a personal medical officer for Defense Minister Chen Cheng. 🌷
During those years, he experienced the baptism of war and witnessed the great changes of the great age.
A man who has seen war, who has seen life and death, returns home with a vision of not just a clinic - but how to make life better for the people of this land.
He inherited a declining Penang.🥹
Later, Lim Chong Eu took the road to politics.
In 1969, he became Penang's chief minister.
But what he inherited was Penang, which was going downhill.
It turns out that Penang has long relied on its status as a "free port" - a thriving merchant port where goods come and go freely. This is Penang's economic lifeline.
But that was when Penang lost its status as a free port.
The lifeline was broken, and the economic prospects of the entire city were suddenly bleak. The port is in decline, jobs are hard to find, and many people are worried about Penang's future.
A once splendid trading port is going to sleep and decay. 😔
This is the burden Lim Chong Eu took.
3. He made a bold decision to become an industry.✨
Facing such a difficult situation, Lim Chong Eu did not wait.
He made a bold decision at the time - since it was no longer possible to rely on ports, he turned to industry.
He set his sights on the newest industry of his time: electronics manufacturing.
He decisively promoted industrialization, setting up a free trade zone at Penang Bayang Lepas area, which successfully brought in the first multinational electronics companies.
This step was the right one.
Those big international factories came, bringing technology and thousands of jobs. The export manufacturing industry is booming.
A previously "dormant agrarian economy" was thus awakened by him, little by little, to become a "vigorous manufacturing centre." 🌹
Penang has gradually become an internationally renowned electronics industry town.
It has earned a prestigious reputation as the "Silicon Valley of the East."
From a dying port to the center of the world-class electronics industry, Lim Chong Eu's Penang has found a new way to live.
4. This vision has allowed Penang's economy to grow nearly 60 times.🇲🇾
How strong was this foundation laid by Lim Chong Eu ?
From 1970 to 2008, in just 38 years, Penang's GDP grew nearly 60 times.
It grew from RM709 million in 1970 to RM468 billion in 2008.
Not only that - a quarter of Malaysia's exports and nearly 70% of its tourism revenue come from Penang.
In its most practical sense, it has provided employment opportunities for thousands of Penang people and equipped them with the skills and skills to compete with the world.
Lim Chong Eu's visions was for ordinary Penang lang to have a good job and be able to live a good life on their own land Penang ❤️
He served as chief minister, and in doing so, he served 21 years - the longest serving chief minister in Penang. And these 21 years have been the 21 years that Penang has been transformed.The day he left, there were empty alleys.🌷
Lim Chong Eu retired from politics in 1990.
But the people of Penang never forgot him.
Lim Chong Eu passed away at age 91,on November 24, 2010.
He received the highest recognition - he was one of the few political predecessors to have received a "state funeral." On the day of the funeral, thousands of Penang people spontaneously came out to send him the last journey.
In honor of his contribution, Penang named the longest highway in the state (up to 18 kilometers) the "Lim Chong Eu Road."
Today, every Penang lang who drives past the avenue and looks out the window at the sea - it is the old man who paved the road for the city. 🌹
And Penang, which inherited the prosperity from him, continues to this day.

Lim Chong Eu's story has inspired us a lot.
He showed us what vision is: when everyone was anxious about Penang losing its Freeport, he saw a new path for the electronics industry. A true leader can see a way out where others see a desperate situation.
He also showed us what it means to find a way for people: He pushed industrialization, and the end result was to give thousands of ordinary people jobs, bread and bread and skills. The prosperity of a city ultimately falls into the lives of every ordinary person. 🇲🇾
A doctor could treat only a few patients. But Lim Chong Eu chose to "cure" a city that was in decline - and he did.
Penang today is the same Penang with its ancient charm, modern industry and tourist destination - because decades ago, a man bet on the hardest, but rightest, road for it. ❤️
