Puppeteers in action !

As part of Project Riwayat, Katha 1 by Bright Ong, one half of the Project Riwayat duo, together with his team of puppeteers, will be present at the Hin Market over three consecutive weekends, with puppet activations taking place on both Saturdays and Sundays, alongside small teasers of what's to come later this atternoon.

While approximate timings are indicated in the poster, they remain flexible, so keep an eye out as you move through the space, you might just come across them when you least expect it.

This exhibition explores the “singular tragedy” that occurs when ecological degradation leads to cultural erasure; as species vanish, so do the stories, dances, and crafts they once inspired.

A series of textile works inspired by traditional Indian saree embroidery

𝙋𝙪𝙥𝙥𝙚𝙩𝙧𝙮 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠𝙨 by Bright Ong
Traditional craft, puppetry, reclaimed materials, batik, and performance

As our wildlife disappears, the very soul of our craftsmanship vanishes with it, leaving our cultural identity hollowed out. These works issue a poignant wake-up call, signaling that our collective identity is precariously balanced and that the survival of our heritage depends entirely on the survival of the natural world.

ᴀᴀ x ᴄᴏᴇx # 11 | Jarence Yoong

Jarence Yoong is a versatile Penang-based artist working across watercolor and oil painting. She began her artistic journey with oil painting, studying under master painter Chong Hon Fatt.

Her practice explores the dialogue between the transparency of watercolors and the rich textures of oil, capturing the weathered beauty and soulful light of Georgetown’s historic corners.

Jarence pays close attention to details that are often overlooked. Through her brushwork, these quiet spaces are brought to life. Her work invites viewers to pause and reconnect with city memories and the quiet landscapes of their own inner reflection.

ᴀᴀ x ᴄᴏᴇx # 10 | Chin Kok Yan

From picking up a paintbrush in retirement to building a decade-long artistic journey, Chin’s story is a gentle reminder that it’s never too late to rediscover joy.

Every Sunday, he ventures through streets, alleys, villages and mountains with his art supplies, savoring the joy of painting at a slow pace.

Over the past ten years, he has evolved from cautious, minimalist lines to a relaxed and confident brushstroke, simple in color and free from over-decoration.

More remarkably, he has rediscovered a childlike heart in his art, producing charming and playful figures along the way.

This exhibition traces his ten-year artistic journey and reveals the whimsical world within his heart—what he calls his “childlike paintings.”

In the “BEGINNING,” he picked up the brush in search of joy; through the journey, he found the childlike heart he had long lost at the “END.”
