PACOS Trust PACOS Trust is a community-based organisation dedicated in supporting indigenous communities in Sabah

PACOS Trust is a community-based organization (CBO) dedicated towards supporting indigenous communities in Sabah. Although registered under the Trustees Ordinance (Sabah) only in 1997, the organization has been actively involved with communities since 1987 as a different legal entity. PACOS is an acronym for 'Partners of Community Organizations in Sabah'. PACOS sees itself as an organization that

strives to empower indigenous communities through systematic building and strengthening of community organizations, which can act collectively on its own. The organization also sees the need to support networking among organizations struggling to assert right over community resources and revitalizing indigenous systems. "Issues such as pollution, climate change, deforestation, and human overpopulation have drastically changed the way the world works. Because of the significance of these issues, the United Nations created World Environment Day to help educate people about the consequences of human activity.

World Environment Day is all about teaching people about environmental issues, giving people the opportunity to change the habits they have that are affecting the environment and work towards change."

-Happy World Environment Day-

ā€œOur small struggle began from nothing, sustained only by belief and determination. We may not have great financial resources, but we continue striving to ensure that future generations can still enjoy the same blessings and resources.ā€
— Mastupang Somoi, Kg. Sungai Eloi, Pitas, Sabah, Malaysia.

Mastupang Somoi is part of the Indigenous Tombonuo community of Kg. Sungai Eloi in Pitas, Sabah, Malaysia, where Indigenous Communities have been defending their mangrove territories, customary lands, and Indigenous Knowledge systems for many years. Together with the Gabungan 6 Kampung (G6) and wider community networks, they have resisted the expansion of commercial shrimp ponds that threatened the mangrove ecosystem and the livelihoods of Indigenous Peoples.

Despite limited financial resources, the community continues to take practical local action. These efforts include restoring and replanting mangrove forests, protecting traditional food sources such as lokan (mangrove clams), documenting and mapping their customary territories, developing community protocols for conservation, and passing on traditional ecological knowledge to younger generations.
