We often notice food only when prices increase or supplies become scarce. Yet behind every meal lies a complex system involving farmers, water, land, energy, logistics, and labour. Food may seem ordinary because it is available every day, but its true value extends far beyond the price printed on a receipt.

For decades, agricultural success has often been measured by how much food we produce. Higher yields, larger harvests, and greater output have helped feed growing populations around the world. Yet as chronic diseases continue to rise, a new question emerges: are we producing food that truly nourishes people? The challenge today may not be about producing more food alone, but ensuring that the food we produce supports both human health and long-term food system resilience.

Food and Feelings: Is There a Connection?

Have you ever noticed that some foods leave you feeling energised, focused, and calm, while others make you feel sluggish, irritable, or constantly craving more?

The food we consume does more than provide calories. It influences our blood sugar, hormones, gut microbiome, and even the chemicals that affect our mood and mental well-being. In fact, scientists often refer to the gut as the "second brain" because of its close connection with the nervous system.

Perhaps the question is not only-what are we eating? But also- how is our food making us feel?

Dear future generation, a farmer does not merely grow food.

He negotiates with unpredictable weather.
He worries about rising fertiliser prices.
He depends on soil that is becoming more exhausted each year.

Yet every morning, he still plants with hope.

Maybe regenerative agriculture is not merely about farming.

Maybe it is about restoring hope back into our food system.

Persatuan Pertanian Regeneratif Malaysia (PPRM) and Regenerative Farmers Malaysia (RFM) are honoured to be invited to share at the Akademi Sains Malaysia (ASM) on 4 June 2026.

This is an opportunity to showcase how regenerative agriculture can contribute to resilient food systems, thriving rural communities, and a sustainable future for generations to come.

We thank ASM for providing this platform and look forward to meaningful discussions and collaborations.

OBESITY & FARMING SYSTEM

Regenerative agriculture and obesity may appear unrelated at first glance, yet they are deeply interconnected through the modern food system. Industrial agricultural practices often prioritise quantity, shelf life, and mass production, contributing to the widespread availability of ultra-processed, calorie-dense but nutrient-poor foods.

This has gradually shaped unhealthy dietary patterns and rising obesity rates worldwide. In contrast, regenerative agriculture emphasises soil health, biodiversity, ecological balance, and nutrient-dense food production. Healthier soils may contribute to healthier crops and livestock, ultimately supporting better human nutrition and metabolic health.

Therefore, regenerative agriculture should not merely be viewed as an environmental approach, but also as a long-term public health strategy capable of strengthening food quality, improving dietary resilience, and addressing obesity at its roots.

According to Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, food plays a fundamental role in human life, forming the base of the pyramid together with water and shelter as core physiological necessities. The theory suggests that individuals must first fulfil these basic survival needs before they are able to focus on higher-order aspirations such as safety, belonging, self-esteem, and self-actualisation.

But what kind of food we are actually consuming? Does it nourish human health while preserving the health of the planet?
