Penang Indian Wellbeing Association Organizes Deepavali Shopping for 15 Children

George Town, 15 October 2024 – The Penang Indian Wellbeing Association brought smiles to the faces of 15 children by organizing a special Deepavali shopping event at Umayal Textile. The event was aimed at helping the children prepare for the upcoming Deepavali festival, ensuring they had new outfits and accessories to celebrate in style.

Before heading to Umayal Textile, the association hosted a heartwarming dinner at Little India, Penang, for 45 people, including the children and their parents along with the volunteers. The gathering fostered a sense of community and togetherness, which is a core value of Deepavali.

After enjoying their meal, the 15 children embarked on their shopping spree, where they chose vibrant Deepavali outfits. The girls, in particular, were treated to accessories to complement their traditional costumes. In addition to their new attire, the children received Deepavali-themed gifts, including packets of muruku, firecrackers, and money packets, adding to the festive joy.

Mr. Arvind Poobalan, Chairman of the Penang Indian Wellbeing Association, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to all the sponsors who made the event possible. He extended special thanks to Mr. Sivasubramaniam Shanmugam, whose generous sponsorship played a key role in ensuring the event’s success.

“This initiative is part of our ongoing efforts to support the children in our community, especially during festive seasons like Deepavali. It is heartening to see their joy and excitement,” said Mr. Arvind Poobalan.

The event was a meaningful gesture, spreading the light of Deepavali to those in need, and reinforcing the values of compassion, generosity, and community spirit.

Navaratri Festival Begins at Batu Uban Sri Veera Kaliamman Temple with Cultural Performances

The annual Navaratri Festival at the Batu Uban Sri Veera Kaliamman Temple commenced on 3rd October 2024 with a vibrant celebration. The festival, which is a key event in the local Hindu calendar, was marked by the participation of devotees and various cultural activities that reflected the rich traditions of the community.

The first day’s ubayam was jointly conducted by the Penang Indian Wellbeing Association and the Batu Uban Ayyappan Service Society. Mr. Arvind, the Chairman of both organizations, highlighted the deep commitment of the association towards the first day’s ubayam every year. He proudly stated that this year marks the 10th consecutive year of their involvement in this sacred tradition. "We are honored to be part of this annual celebration, and we aim to continue this commitment as a symbol of our devotion and community service," Mr. Arvind said.

The first day of the Navaratri Festival was attended by approximately 100 devotees, including notable guests such as the Deputy President of the Penang Hindu Sabha, Datuk Mariadass, and the Chairman of PKAPP, Mr. Alagesan.

In addition to the prayers, the festival’s opening day featured a vibrant cultural showcase, adding a festive spirit to the event. The G Town Academy performed traditional dances such as karagatham, mayilatham, and kollatham, which enthralled the audience. These performances, rooted in Indian cultural heritage, provided an energetic and colorful backdrop to the solemn rituals of the day. G Town Academy headed by Mr. Kumaran is one of the leading cultural dance performance group in Penang.

Navaratri, which spans nine nights, is dedicated to worshipping the goddess Durga and her various forms, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil. The Batu Uban Sri Veera Kaliamman Temple will continue to host prayers and other cultural activities throughout the festival, welcoming devotees from all over Penang and beyond.

This year’s event not only strengthens the spiritual bonds within the community but also highlights the role of cultural heritage in preserving identity and fostering unity among local Indian community.
