Free Tree Society Kuala Lumpur Free Tree Society - we take seeds, we sprout them, we look after the seedlings, then we give away the little plants for free on environmental holidays!

Bangsar Nursery open Saturday morning to the public. Tuesday morning by appointment only. Free Tree Society Kuala Lumpur is based on very simple principles - we take seeds, we sprout them, we look after the seedlings, then we give away healthy little plants to the public for free on environmental holidays! Through this act of giving away plants for free we hope to encourage a whole host of other g

reen goals and objectives, such as to:
- Increase and improve the suburban and city greenscape;
- Educate people on the correct way to plant and care for trees;
- Increase peoples' awareness of environmental holidays;
- Encourage a love of local plants; and
- Establish a dedicated plant society where like-minded city greenies can come together for the love of plants and grow and nurture seedlings in a sustainable and environmentally conscious manner. Volunteers are welcome to come to our nursery to help out. We have volunteer sessions on Tuesdays (9:30 - 11:30am) and Saturdays (9am - 12pm). Volunteers do a variety of tasks from propagating new plants to gardening and landscaping. All tools are provided - you may like to wear mosquito repellant and sunscreen - also, bring a hat and wear sensible outdoor shoes. Big groups of over 6 pax should please contact us is advance and book a day to visit. Parents are responsible for their children (please note there are sharp tools, fertilizers, a pond and open drains on site). Volunteers are the backbone behind Free Tree Society - the more we plant the more we can giveaway, so if you'd like more giveaways, do come and help us out one day! No experience necessary.

My Native Plants: Tampoi – Baccaurea macrocarpa 🌳

Baccaurea macrocarpa, commonly known as Tampoi, is a native tropical fruit tree found in the rainforests of Malaysia, particularly in Borneo, as well as parts of Peninsular Malaysia and Sumatra. This medium-sized tree can grow up to 6–15 metres tall and is admired for its distinctive clusters of round fruits that develop directly on the trunk and larger branches, a characteristic known as cauliflory.

When ripe, Tampoi fruits turn yellowish to reddish-brown and contain soft, translucent white flesh with a sweet-tangy flavour. The fruits are enjoyed fresh and are a popular seasonal delicacy among local communities. Beyond its edible appeal, the tree contributes to forest biodiversity by providing food for wildlife such as birds, squirrels, and other fruit-eating animals, which help disperse its seeds throughout the ecosystem. Its flowers are insect-pollinated, further supporting local pollinator populations.

🌳 Growing Forests, Growing Communities 🌳

Last weekend, we celebrated KPARC Community Day in Jalong Tinggi, Perak, under the theme “Growing Forests, Growing Communities”.

What began as a forest restoration project has grown into something much bigger — a partnership between communities, government agencies, NGOs, schools, volunteers and supporters who share a common belief: that healthy forests and thriving communities go hand in hand.

Together, we have:
🌱 Planted 1,650 native trees
🌱 Cultivated a sanctuary for 43 IUCN red listed tree species
🌱 Created employment and training opportunities for local Orang Asli
🌱 Supported community-led micro nurseries, eco-guiding, education and community engagement programmes

Most importantly, KPARC highlights the invaluable knowledge and stewardship of the Orang Asli community of Jalong Tinggi.

We were also excited to launch the new Jalong Tinggi website, helping more people discover KPARC, community enterprises, nature-based activities, and local accommodation.

At Free Tree Society, our new motto is “Awareness Into Action.”

KPARC shows what happens when awareness becomes action, and action becomes long-term stewardship.

Thank you to the Jalong Tinggi community, our partners, sponsors, volunteers and supporters for being part of this journey.

Visit jalongtinggi.my to learn more about KPARC!

We’re kicking off World Environment Month strong this June! 🌿 From university students to corporate teams and families, we’ve welcomed diverse groups to learn about the urgency of climate change through hands-on activities such as transplanting native tree species, understanding waste and methane emissions, and exploring solutions.

And of course, everyone gets to bring home — a small step towards growing a greener future. 🌱 Sometimes, meaningful climate action begins with simple actions, and we’re grateful to be part of that journey together!

Our Nature Education Program is run in partnership with Taman Tugu and wonderfully sponsored by CIMB Islamic Bank. Corporations and students are welcome to book sessions on Wed and Fri mornings. We run public sessions on Sat afternoons. Find out more at www.freetreesociety.org and email [email protected] to book. ✨

A thousand apologies to everyone who has been waiting! We will try to figure out what went wrong and make sure the same thing does NOT happen tomorrow night! Enjoy the talk!

In Part 1 of this talk, we will show you how Cameron Highlands is much much more than just strawberries and tea as we uncover the dazzling array of plants that make this habitat their home!

Meet a plant with an angelic name but a demonic poison; a native herb equivalent to Ginseng, and be wowed by endangered slipper orchids as well as other highland-endemic plants.
