PSIMA at PROFEX2026: Witnessing a Historic Milestone for Malaysia's Professional Community

A proud and memorable day for the Malaysian Psychological Association (PSIMA) at PROFEX2026.

PSIMA was honoured to be invited to witness a historic occasion during PROFEX2026, organised by Balai Ikhtisas Malaysia and officiated by YAB Prime Minister Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Representing PSIMA at this landmark event was Dr. Shazli Ghazali, demonstrating our association's commitment to advancing psychology as an integral profession in nation-building and societal wellbeing.

What made this occasion truly historic was the announcement that:

🎉 29 September 2026 is officially recognized as Malaysia Professional Day (Hari Ikhtisas Malaysia)

This inaugural recognition marks a significant milestone in acknowledging the vital role of professional communities and multidisciplinary collaboration in driving national development, innovation, public service excellence, and human capital advancement.

The declaration reflects a powerful vision: that Malaysia's future prosperity depends not only on technological and economic progress, but also on the collective contributions of professionals across diverse fields working together for the greater good.

As the national voice for psychology professionals, PSIMA welcomes this recognition and remains committed to contributing psychological science, evidence-based practice, and professional expertise towards building a healthier, more resilient, and people-centred Malaysia.

Yesterday was more than a celebration of professions.

It is a celebration of collaboration.
It is a celebration of expertise.
It is a celebration of our shared responsibility in shaping Malaysia's future.

Together, we move forward in strengthening professions, empowering communities, and building a better nation for generations to come.

People Matter. Minds Matter. A Brighter Malaysia.

PSIMA NEWS FLASH | 6th National Psychology Forum Successfully Concluded

On 28 September 2026, the Persatuan Psikologi Malaysia (PSIMA) successfully hosted the 6th National Psychology Forum on the timely and thought-provoking theme:

"Loneliness Epidemic: Why Are We Becoming Lonelier in an Increasingly Connected World?"

A Dialogue for a More Connected Tomorrow.

Despite living in an era of constant digital connectivity, the forum highlighted a growing paradox: many individuals continue to experience loneliness, social disconnection, and a diminished sense of belonging. Through engaging dialogue and evidence-informed perspectives, the forum explored loneliness as not only an individual challenge but also an emerging societal and public health concern.

We were honoured to feature three distinguished experts who shared valuable insights from clinical, social, and developmental psychology perspectives:

1. Madam NUR AINI ALEGREA SUNER
Clinical Psychologist, International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM)

2. Dr. Suzanna Awang Bono
Senior Lecturer & Social Psychologist, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM)

3. Dr. SUWAIBAH BT ZAKARIA -
Senior Lecturer in Developmental Psychology & Director, Pusat Minda Lestari, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS)

Session moderated by Baktiar Hasnan

Throughout the evening, participants explored critical issues including:

1. The psychology of loneliness, social isolation, and belonging
2. Mental health implications of chronic loneliness
3. The paradox of technology and social media in modern relationships
4. Loneliness across different life stages
5. Building stronger communities, workplaces, schools, and families
6. Practical strategies to foster meaningful human connection

One of the most powerful takeaways from the forum was a reminder that:

Loneliness is not merely the absence of people. It is the absence of meaningful connection, genuine understanding, and a sense of belonging.

As Malaysia continues to navigate the complexities of a rapidly evolving digital society, psychology has an increasingly important role in helping individuals, families, organizations, and communities create spaces where people feel seen, valued, and connected.

PSIMA extends its heartfelt appreciation to all panelists, participants, members, partners, and supporters who contributed to the success of this important national conversation.

Together, let us continue building a society where mental wellbeing, belonging, and human connection remain at the heart of our collective progress.

People Matter. Minds Matter. A Brighter Malaysia.

PSIMA Statement | From Screening to Sustained Support: A Call for Action

The report that 55,169 civil servants have been identified as being at high risk and requiring intervention should be viewed as a wake-up call for all stakeholders. The number is not merely a statistic. It represents individuals who may be experiencing significant psychological distress and require timely professional support.

At the Malaysian Psychological Association (PSIMA), we welcome efforts to strengthen early identification through psychological screening initiatives. However, screening alone is not the solution. It is only the first step in a comprehensive mental health support system.

What matters most is what comes next:

✅ Professional psychological assessment and risk evaluation
✅ Early intervention and counselling support
✅ Clear referral pathways for complex and high-risk cases
✅ Continuous monitoring and case management
✅ Workplace policies that promote psychological well-being
✅ Sufficient psychological workforce capacity across ministries and agencies

Mental health challenges in the workplace can affect productivity, engagement, decision-making, and overall quality of life. More importantly, behind every number is a human being, a family member, and a valued contributor to the nation's development.

PSIMA believes that investing in psychological services is not a cost but a strategic investment in human capital. A psychologically healthy workforce is essential for building a resilient, productive, and sustainable public service.

Let us move beyond identifying risks and focus on ensuring that every individual receives the support they need to recover, thrive, and contribute meaningfully to society.

Screening is the doorway. Support, intervention, and recovery must be the destination.

🧠 Mental Health Matters More Than Ever

In today’s fast-paced and highly connected world, many people are silently struggling with stress, anxiety, emotional exhaustion, and loneliness. Success, productivity, and achievement mean little if we neglect our psychological well-being.

At the Malaysian Psychological Association (PSIMA), we believe that psychological wellness is not merely the absence of mental illness. It is about building resilience, fostering meaningful relationships, developing emotional intelligence, and creating environments where individuals can thrive.

Every conversation about mental health helps break stigma. Every act of kindness strengthens our communities. Every effort to understand ourselves and others contributes to a healthier and more compassionate society.

Let us continue to promote awareness, encourage help-seeking behaviour, and make psychological well-being a shared responsibility.

Together, we can build a mentally healthier Malaysia.

🇲🇾 More Than 55,000 Public Servants Identified as High Risk: A Wake-Up Call for Malaysia's Psychological Well-Being

The recent report that 55,169 Malaysian public servants were identified as high-risk for psychological health concerns, including suicidal tendencies, should not be viewed merely as a statistic. It is a call for collective action. According to Professor Madya Dr Shazli Ezzat Ghazali, President of Persatuan Psikologi Malaysia (PSIMA), screening alone is not enough. What matters is ensuring that those identified receive professional assessment, timely intervention, referral, monitoring, and ongoing support.

Sinar Harian link : https://www.sinarharian.com.my/article/797418/berita/nasional/kesihatan-psikologi-lebih-55000-penjawat-awam-berisiko-tinggi---psima

At PSIMA, we believe that psychological well-being is not solely an individual's responsibility. Workplace demands, leadership quality, organizational culture, psychological safety, work-life balance, and social support all play critical roles in shaping mental health outcomes.

The reality is clear:

✅ Mental health is a workforce issue.
✅ Mental health is a leadership issue.
✅ Mental health is a societal issue.
✅ Mental health is everyone's responsibility.

As Malaysia continues to strengthen its talent ecosystem and public service delivery, investing in a robust National Psychological Infrastructure is no longer optional. It is essential. This includes professional psychological services, evidence-based interventions, ethical practice standards, research, data-driven policies, and accessible referral systems.

As highlighted by Dr Shazli Ezzat Ghazali, success should not be measured by how many individuals are screened, but by how many are successfully supported, monitored, and empowered to recover and thrive.

Let us move:

➡️ From screening to intervention.
➡️ From intervention to prevention.
➡️ From fragmented initiatives to a comprehensive psychological ecosystem.
➡️ From awareness to meaningful action.

Because behind every number is a human being, a family, a colleague, and a life that matters.
