Geutanyoe Foundation

Geutanyoe Foundation Working to uphold humanity, dignity, peace, diversity in Southeast Asia, working with and empowering

The Geutanyoe Foundation is an Aceh and Malaysia based non profit organisation working to protect and empower some of the most vulnerable communities in our region. We were established by activists who pioneered the humanitarian and non-violent civic movement in Aceh since 1999. We are dedicated to cultivating and upholding values of humanity, dignity, peace and sustainability in Aceh and Southeas

t Asia. We seek to provide humanitarian assistance and protection to, and empower and uphold the rights of people in need, including disaster- and conflict-affected communities, refugees, migrants and victims of trafficking, vulnerable and marginalised groups, including children, women, ethnic and religious minorities and isolated communities. We seek to harness local and global knowledge to find sustainable and durable solutions to some of the regional’s most intractable humanitarian and social challenges. We also seek through our work to protect, rejuvenate and promote Aceh's unique social, cultural, historical and ecological heritage as a contribution to humanity, society and our planet, working through catalytic humanitarian, community empowerment, educational, cultural and ecological initiatives. “Geutanyoe” is the Acehnese word for “us”, “we” or “ours”. We chose this as the name of our organisation because Aceh’s experience has taught us that the key to sustaining peace after decades of war and isolation lies in building common visions while respecting differences and diversity: in recognising, celebrating and protecting Aceh's diverse heritage, genealogies, traditions, ecology, identities, and ideas; bridging differences through dialogue and cultivating respect for diversity; and forging shared values and common visions for the future. Our logo represents the Acehnese 'Saleum' greeting, in traditional Gayo 'kerawang' motif and colours.

We express our heartfelt thanks to YB Ustad Ahmad Tarmizi, MP of S*k, Kedah and Deputy Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group Malaysia for Refugee Policy Deputy Chair, for his leadership and support, which made possible a recent health awareness and social cohesion programme in S*k. The event that brought together local residents and the Rohingya community in a shared commitment to wellbeing, dignity, and inclusive communities. Thank you also to YAB Menteri Besar Kedah for showing support for this initiative.

Throughout the day, families visited health-education booths, received food packs, and enjoyed community performances that bridged cultures and nurtured trust. The S*k District Health Office also provided essential children’s vaccinations and health screenings — a vital step toward ensuring that every child, regardless of background, can access basic healthcare.

But beyond the activities, the programme reflected something deeper: the importance of inclusive public health outreach and community-level engagement as part of Malaysia’s broader efforts to strengthen social cohesion and local resilience. When local institutions and refugee communities work side by side, it reduces barriers, counters misinformation, and helps shape neighbourhoods where everyone feels seen, safe, and supported.

This initiative was made possible through the collaboration of the office of YB , .my, APPGM-Refugee Policy, , and Geutanyoe Malaysia — a powerful example of what multisector partnerships can achieve when grounded in compassion, practical action, and a vision for truly inclusive and healthier communities.

Urgent Solidarity Appeal for the Aceh Flood Emergency

Severe floods and landslides have swept across Aceh. Entire villages have disappeared, families are displaced, roads and bridges are cut off, and communities struggling to survive.

For Geutanyoe Malaysia, this is not just another crisis.
Aceh is where our story began.

In 1998, our co-founder .fan first started working with local Acehnese humanitarians during the conflict years. Other Geutanyoe co-founders were then leading local responses to support IDPs displaced by conflict. In 2015 Geutanyoe Malaysia Co-Founder and Co-Director was rescued in Aceh by local fishermen.

It was in Aceh, in humanity, courage, and hardship that the spirit of the Geutanyoe movement — “we are all one family” — was born.

We witnessed Aceh rise from conflict.
We witnessed Aceh rise again from the 2004 tsunami.
We witnessed the boundless compassion of the Acehnese, who opened their doors to Rohingya and other refugees even when they themselves had so little.

And now, Aceh needs us.

🌿 Why Local Responders Matter

Our co-founders have always believed in one principle:

Those closest to the crisis are best placed to lead the response.

Local organisations and volunteers are already on the ground, reaching families first. Our role is to support, strengthen, and stand in solidarity with them.
