Many of these dogs and cats are born on the streets, while others are abandoned, or pets that are permitted to roam free. These animals fight to survive. They are often starving, sick or injured, facing countless health challenges. I run a small volunteer rescue in the rural town of Xpujil, which is sort of between Cancun and Guatemala. Our mission is to prevent the suffering of animals by reducin
g unwanted litters of kittens and puppies. Unfortunately we don’t have any animal hospital or clinics here and the local government does not offer sterilization campaigns. I am the de facto "go to" for neighbors dropping off unwanted litters of dogs and cats. I have even received injured possums, eagles, birds, snakes, turtles, rabbits, and a wild boar! I work full-time doing job training and animal rescue takes up the rest of my life. It's exhausting, but exhilarating to be part of the solution. We organize about three to four spay and neuter campaigns per year with vets from the city of Chetumal, which is almost two hours from here.
