Steve needs out of the refuge, he has been there 4 years and has hit his limit. Please share this around, I will pay for his travel expenses and anything else needed to get him to a good home or to a good rescue group. I will be reaching out to my rescue people in hopes that one of the groups agrees to take him on. He certainly deserves it!
Steve’s Story
Steve’s life began on the street. As a tiny puppy—around 8 weeks old—he was being given away outside a grocery store in Mexico along with another dog. Both were rescued immediately. The other dog was rehomed right away, but Steve’s journey took a different path.
After spending a short time in my home, Steve was moved to our sister refuge. He has now lived there for four years — his entire life. While the refuge has kept him safe, the constant noise and stress have taken a toll on this gentle dog, and he is ready for something he has never known: a real home.
What Steve Is Like
Steve is a loving, people-oriented dog who genuinely enjoys human company. He is friendly with adults and children, social with other dogs, and barks only a normal amount. Like many Mexican street dog mixes, Steve is intelligent, observant, and people-focused. We are cat testing him this week.
He is currently underweight, not from illness, but from prolonged stress in a high-intensity environment. With calm surroundings, proper meals, and consistency, he is expected to thrive.
Training & Daily Life
Steve is:
- Learning leash skills (the refuge is actively working on this)
- Beginning house-training support
Because he has lived his entire life in a refuge, Steve is still learning how to relax around food. He eats quickly and guards his meals, which is completely understandable given his history. He does best with:
- a slow-feeding bowl
- a calm, predictable feeding routine
- a patient handler who understands food insecurity behaviors
With kindness and structure, this is something Steve can absolutely improve.
The Home Steve Needs
Steve will do best with someone who:
- has dog experience or is comfortable with training
- understands rescue dogs and long-term shelter stress
- is patient, calm, and consistent
- is willing to give Steve time to decompress and learn what “safe” feels like
He is not a difficult dog — he is a dog who has never had a chance.
Why Steve Matters
Steve has done nothing wrong. He has simply waited… and waited… and waited.
After four years in a refuge, what he needs now is not perfection — just a person who sees his potential and gives him the patience every good dog deserves.
Steve is ready to belong.
