In its 5th year, local nonprofit environmental conservation program - Azul Sayu - continues evolving and growing to meet the needs of Sayulita! FUN FACTS ABOUT AZUL SAYU'S PROGRAMS
-Education programs - especially for school children - and public recycling bins are provided at no charge throughout Sayulita and San Ignacio
-There are over 100 recycling bins around town. Look for them!
-Recyclables
- PET plastic, glass, metal, cardboard - can be dropped off every Saturday, 9-11am on the corner of Carretera Punta de Mita and Calle Tortuga. It is a great place to come ask recycling questions and bring your items!
-Recyclables can also be dropped 24/7 at the containers in front of Queens on Revolucion north
-Each month a community beach clean up takes place, in partnership with World Wildlife Fund
-About 35 TONS of glass are recycled each year in Sayulita
-About ONE TON of plastic is recycled each month in Sayulita! Plastic is shredded and melted in Guadalajara, and made into shoes, carpets, or roadways.
-All items collected and sorted for recycling are processed in Mexico. We recycle only what can truly be crushed / shredded / melted in our country, with nothing shipped off shore!
-While the local government provides trash services to our county, no recycling services are provided or funded by the government.
- The local program’s budget is approximately 25,000 USD per year; expenses include workers, rent for our sorting and storage facility (called the acopio), gas and vehicle maintenance.
- Recycling services are free to the community! (There is a private pick up service for a nominal fee and these fees cover about 45% of the center’s budget.)
