Lily (13) and Renata (11) Duarte have had an incredible summer of chess! Representing Mexico in Peru and Colombia, and competing nationally, these San Miguel stars are quickly becoming international forces.

The SMAjedrez Chess Club will meet from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm on Saturday, August 9, 2025 at Cafe Murmullo although many members will be playing in a tournament on that day. Beginners and advanced players are welcome. There is a tournament being held in SMA on Saturday and several of the club members, including myself and Brian, plan to play in it. The boards and chess sets will be available at Cafe Murmullo for anyone who wants to play there.

From July 27 to August 3rd, Lily and Renata represented Mexico in the ###V Pan-American Youth Chess Festival, a prestigious event which attracted 800 youth and child chess players from 25 countries.

Lily and Renata faced top players from several different countries in North and South America, including the United States, Guatemala, El Salvador, Jamaica, Colombia, Ecuador, Argentina, Paraguay, Bolivia, Brazil, and Peru. This challenging tournament, which took place in Lima, Peru, was an incredible and unforgettable experience.

Renata faced a titled player for the first time - a Woman Candidate Master from Guatemala who was one of the favorites to win the tournament. She was rated over 200 points higher than Renata and is also a year older. Renata was able to defeat that girl, and she had several other important wins and draws during the tournament. Though Renata wasn't able to get a medal at the tournament, she definitely grew significantly and returned to Mexico a much stronger player. Renata will stay in the same age category another year, whereas the majority of the strongest girls will move up a category.

Lily's category had several titled players with lots of international experience; however, Lily was able to get first place in the rapid tournament. She didn't lose a single game in rapid and finished a full point above her closest rival, a WCM from Colombia who was the favorite to win the tournament but lost to Lily in the fifth round. Lily was also able to get bronze in the blitz tournament. Her performance was significantly above her rating in that tournament, and she was able to gain around 100 international rating points.

It has been a remarkable journey so far from entering into the world of competitive chess three years ago under the guidance of the founder of SMAjedrez Chess Club to, in Lily's case, becoming the U14 Pan-American Rapid Champion.

El Club de Ajedrez SMAjedrez se reunirá de 10:00 a 13:00 el sábado 9 de agosto de 2025 en el Café Murmullo. Se aceptan jugadores principiantes y avanzados. El sábado se celebrará un torneo en SMA y varios miembros del club, incluyéndome a mí y a Brian, planeamos participar. Los tableros y juegos de ajedrez estarán disponibles en el Café Murmullo para quienes deseen participar.

Del 27 de julio al 3 de agosto, Lily y Renata representaron a México en el ###V Festival Panamericano de Ajedrez Juvenil, un prestigioso evento que atrajo a 800 jóvenes y niños ajedrecistas de 25 países.

Lily y Renata se enfrentaron a los mejores jugadores de varios países de Norteamérica y Sudamérica, incluyendo Estados Unidos, Guatemala, El Salvador, Jamaica, Colombia, Ecuador, Argentina, Paraguay, Bolivia, Brasil y Perú. Este desafiante torneo, celebrado en Lima, Perú, fue una experiencia increíble e inolvidable.

Renata se enfrentó por primera vez a una jugadora titulada: una candidata a Maestra de Guatemala, una de las favoritas para ganar el torneo. Tenía más de 200 puntos de rating y era un año mayor. Renata logró derrotarla y cosechó varias victorias y empates importantes durante el torneo. Aunque no consiguió una medalla, sin duda creció significativamente y regresó a México con una fuerza mucho mayor. Renata permanecerá en la misma categoría un año más, mientras que la mayoría de las chicas más fuertes subirán de categoría.

La categoría de Lily contaba con varias jugadoras tituladas con amplia experiencia internacional; sin embargo, Lily logró obtener el primer lugar en el torneo de rápidas. No perdió ni una sola partida en rápidas y terminó con un punto de ventaja sobre su rival más cercana, una WCM de Colombia, favorita para ganar el torneo, pero que perdió contra Lily en la quinta ronda. Lily también logró el bronce en el torneo de blitz. Su rendimiento superó considerablemente su rating en ese torneo y logró sumar alrededor de 100 puntos de rating internacional.

Ha sido una trayectoria notable desde su ingreso al mundo del ajedrez competitivo hace tres años bajo la tutela del fundador del Club de Ajedrez SMAjedrez hasta, en el caso de Lily, convertirse en la Campeona Panamericana de Ajedrez Rápida Sub-14.

Lily and Renata continue to prepare for the Pan American Youth Chess Championships which will be held in Peru at the end of July.

They recently played in a Mexican national tournament to select a team (2 boys, 2 girls) to represent Mexico in the upcoming World Youth Chess Olympiad for players under 16. The Olympiad will be held in Barranquilla, Colombia, in August. This biennial competition is one of the most prestigious chess events worldwide and attracts top players ages 16 and under from around the globe.

Lily played brilliantly throughout the tournament. In six games lasting up to two hours each, she won five and tied one. She finished half a point above her nearest rival with a score of 5.5 points out of a possible 6, and was crowned national champion in the girls 16 and under category. At 13 years old, she competed against girls as old as 16, and also had a win playing black against Mexico's only other titled female player under 16 who, like Lily, is a Woman Candidate Master. This tournament brought together the best young players in Mexico, all competing for a chance to represent their country in a prominent worldwide competition. We are very excited about Lily’s success!

Renata also participated in this challenging tournament and was able to tie games with two national champions (the 2025 U14 champion and the 2024 U13 champion). There was only one category of players for girls under 16. Because of this, Renata at age 11 faced older girls with a great deal of experience. She learned a lot from her games.

The girls will play in Peru at the end of July, and Lily will play in Colombia in August. Lily y Renata continúan preparándose para el Campeonato Panamericano Juvenil de Ajedrez que se realizará en Perú al final de julio.

Recientemente participaron en un torneo nacional mexicano para seleccionar un equipo (2 chicos y 2 chicas) que representará a México en la próxima Olimpiada Mundial Juvenil de Ajedrez para jugadores menores de 16 años. La Olimpiada se celebrará en Barranquilla, Colombia, en agosto. Esta competencia bienal es uno de los eventos de ajedrez más prestigiosos del mundo y atrae a los mejores jugadores menores de 16 años de todo el mundo.

Lily jugó de forma brillante durante todo el torneo. En seis partidas de hasta dos horas de duración cada una, ganó cinco y empató una. Terminó medio punto por encima de su rival más cercana, con una puntuación de 5.5 puntos de 6 posibles, y se coronó campeona nacional en la categoría femenina de 16 años o menos. De 13 años, compitió contra chicas de hasta 16 años, y también logró una victoria jugando con negras contra la única otra jugadora titulada de México menor de 16 años, quien, al igual que Lily, es Candidata a Maestra. The SMAjedrez Chess Club will meet from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm on Saturday, March 22, 2025 at Cafe Murmullo. Beginners and advanced players are welcome.

Lael Baez plans to organize his first tournament as a FENAMAC certified official in three months or less. It will be held in San Miguel and will qualify as an official tournament for FENAMAC ratings points. People will be able to get tournament experience and start or increase their officially recognized ratings. We will provide further details as the tournament plans progress.

Lily and Renata each played in a classic tournament in Leon last weekend. Renata, aged 10, played in an open tournament for men and women of all ages; it was authorized for international play and attracted strong players. Four rounds were played that lasted up to three hours per game. Renata finished in second place in a field of 22 competitors after winning two games and drawing two. In the two games she tied, she played opponents with more experience and higher ratings. In her last round, she tied a 24-year-old man with an international rating about 100 points above her. Renata also played in a blitz tournament with a limit of 3 minutes per player; she finished first among the females. These are remarkable achievements. At only ten years of age, Renata is doing very well against adults with more experience and higher ratings.

The same weekend, Lily, aged 13, participated in an invitation-only private tournament that included our state’s strongest male players, as well as an International Master from Mexico City. Lily was the youngest player (the only under 15) and the only female among the ten elite players in the tournament. It was a grueling schedule with three days of three rounds per day, with each game lasting up to three hours. Lily played well against extremely tough competition, winning two games, tying three and losing four. One of her opponents was a 44-year-old man with a rating over 400 points higher than hers. Another opponent was our state’s top junior (u18) who is 200 points higher and won a national medal last year. Lily finished fifth in the field of ten players. It was definitely the toughest tournament she had ever played in and a great learning experience.

The national arbiter who organized these tournaments wrote a summary of the tournament. This is what he had to say about Lily and Renata (as translated by Google):

Lily and Renata continue to seek new challenges to prepare them for their next international tournament. They will compete in the Mexican National chess championships in April and the CONADE tournament. They have already qualified to represent Mexico in one international tournament this year, and nationals in April will give them the opportunity to qualify for another. Lael Baez planea organizar su primer torneo como oficial certificado por FENAMAC en tres meses o menos. Se celebrará en San Miguel y será un torneo oficial para la clasificación de FENAMAC.
