On Friday evening the entire artistic leadership of The Bel Canto Institute San Miguel was in attendance at Yunuet Laguna's role debut of Puccini's MADAMA BUTTERFLY at Lyric Opera of Kansas City. And what an experience it was!
Yunuet's first big step into a major career was the award of a full scholarship to the Bel Canto Institute San Miguel; from there to the Metropolitan Opera's Laffont competition in San Miguel and an amazing three years in the Metropolitan's Lindemann Young Artists program. And now major roles and recognition in Europe, Latin America and the United States. This is exactly the kind of synergy our various young artist programs in San Miguel make possible, an extraordinary achievement for a small mountain town in Mexico!
And her voiced soared Friday night. It is a monstrously difficult role. She is on stage the whole night expect for a few minutes at the beginning of the first act. The role calls for extreme lyricism and then in the next moment the power to sing over a large orchestra. And she did it with aplomb! This is what each moment in the Bel Canto Institute sessions is about. Thanks to our extraordinary faculty led by Michael Sylvester, Joseph McClain and Ted Taylor for your talent and dedication.

El viernes por la noche, todo el equipo directivo artístico del Instituto Bel Canto San Miguel asistió al debut de Yunuet Laguna en el papel de MADAMA BUTTERFLY de Puccini en la Lyric Opera of Kansas City. ¡Y qué experiencia tan increíble!
El primer gran paso de Yunuet hacia una carrera prometedora fue la obtención de una beca completa para el Instituto Bel Canto de San Miguel; de ahí pasó al concurso Laffont de la Ópera Metropolitana en San Miguel y a tres años extraordinarios en el programa Lindemann para Jóvenes Artistas de la Metropolitan. Y ahora, papeles importantes y reconocimiento en Europa, Latinoamérica y Estados Unidos. Este es precisamente el tipo de sinergia que nuestros diversos programas para jóvenes artistas en San Miguel hacen posible: ¡un logro extraordinario para un pequeño pueblo de montaña en México!
Y su voz brilló con luz propia el viernes por la noche. Es un papel tremendamente difícil. Permanece en el escenario toda la noche, salvo unos minutos al comienzo del primer acto. El papel exige un lirismo extremo y, al instante siguiente, la potencia vocal necesaria para cantar por encima de una gran orquesta. ¡Y lo hizo con aplomo! De esto se trata cada momento en las sesiones del Instituto Bel Canto. Gracias a nuestro extraordinario profesorado, dirigido por Michael Sylvester, Joseph McClain y Ted Taylor, por su talento y dedicación.
