San Pancho Marine Turtle Project

San Pancho Marine Turtle Project Grupo Ecológico de la Costa Verde, A.C., is San Pancho’s only accredited Marine Turtle Project. Grupo Ecológico de la Costa Verde, A.C.

Dedicated to the protection and the conservation of endangered marine turtles since 1991. Project Tortuga is a sea turtle conservation initiative in San Pancho, Mexico, protecting endangered turtles and their coastal habitats since the early 1990s. Through beach patrols, nest protection, and hatchling releases, we give sea turtles a fighting chance at survival. We also focus on environmental educa

tion, community outreach, and ecosystem preservation, engaging both locals and volunteers from around the world. After over three decades, Project Tortuga continues to safeguard wildlife, inspire stewardship, and protect San Pancho’s coastline for future generations.

A few days ago, something really special happened at Playa Malpaso. Our volunteers found a leatherback sea turtle nest and got to witness 14 tiny lives begin their journey 🩵

One by one, these little tortugas made their way toward the ocean, guided by instinct and a whole lot of care from the humans lucky enough to be there. Moments like this stay with you forever.

We’re so grateful to everyone who helps protect these beautiful creatures and gives them a fighting chance.

Swim strong 🙏

Part 3, 1993: The first environmental civil association in the region. Supported by SEMARNAT (Secretaría de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales), the organization gained the authority to protect turtles along neighboring beaches, launch education programs, run community clean- ups, and take on environmental challenges far beyond the shoreline.

Part 2, 1992: Just a small structure on the beach, powered entirely by determination. That summer, as poachers outnumbered protectors, the founders worked side-by-side with local children, families, and fishermen to safeguard the few nests they could find. Word spread. More volunteers joined. Entire families pledged never again to eat turtle eggs. Within a year, the community had shifted from passive observers to active guardians of their coastline.

Part 1, 1991: Nearly 95% of local sea turtle nests in San Pancho were being poached, and the species that had lived here for millions of years was on the brink of disappearing. What started as a small group of friends visiting from California quickly evolved into a community-driven movement.

"When the last one goes, Ulises says, “La úlitma,” turning away with a smile."

This wonderful article by Meera Subramanian captures the high-stakes survival of olive ridley sea turtles in San Pancho, Mexico, where our dedicated volunteers bridge the gap between ancient biological instincts and the modern pressures of poaching and development. ✨

When the beach goes quiet, the work begins. ⭐ Project Tortuga volunteers head out after sunset to track nesting activity, assist with nest protection, and support hatchling releases during the peak season. It’s an immersive way to learn, contribute, and be part of real conservation happening in real time.

Night patrols take place throughout the nesting season from May–November 2026, and full training is provided. You don’t need prior experience, just motivation and respect for wildlife. 🌊✨
