Ricardo and I are nearing twenty years of marriage and ministry in Mexico. It’s hard to believe—and even harder to sum up all those years have held. There have been plenty of moments asking, “What are we doing?” and, just as honestly, “Is it worth it?” Ministry over time carries both joy and deep hurt.
But this past week, God gave us a glimpse of the fruit.
A young man we love—once told he would never amount to anything—has proven otherwise. Jesus Ivan chose a different path. Years ago, Ricardo told him that if he finished high school, we would help him go to college. At the time, it felt unlikely. But Jesus Ivan stepped up. He completed high school in just four months, then called to ask if we meant what we said.
We did.
He moved to Tijuana, enrolled at the TEC, and through the challenges of the pandemic, personal struggles, and demanding coursework, he persevered. Step by step, he stayed the course.
Today, he is a college graduate.
From a little boy in a children’s home to a determined young man, Jesus Ivan has overcome more than most. His story is one of grit, growth, and God’s faithfulness. We are incredibly proud of him.
And it is moments like this that remind us—it is
