It's Target Species Tuesday! 🎯

Say hello to the Caribbean Spiny Lobster (CSL), Panulirus argus! Found in warm waters from the southeastern US through the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico, this lobster is famous for its long, spiny antennae and its role in coastal cuisines.

CSL lack the large claws that other lobsters are famous for. Instead, they have incredibly long antennae that help them sense predators and navigate coral reefs.

Overfishing - especially during the breeding season - is a major threat to the CSL. Help protect this iconic species by abstaining from seafood or supporting sustainable seafood practices.

Caught in a trap they never set. 💔

Every year, countless marine animals suffer and die from plastic entanglement - fishing lines, six-pack rings, and ghost nets silently destroy life beneath the waves.

But we can fight back! Every piece of trash we remove makes a difference. Whether you're diving, walking the beach, or just near the water - pick it up! We all have a role in protecting our oceans.

As shown in these pictures, our team came across a make-shift buoy with dozens of meters of rope dangling below, dragging across the sea floor. While collecting it, we got a sobering reminder of the impact plastic pollution can have. Several gorgonians had been snagged and dislodged from the benthos, fish were trapped in the buoy structure, and other benthic creatures had unknowingly connected to the debris. Happy to be able to remove such a damaging piece of trash from our oceans!

It's Target Species Tuesday! 🎯

Give a warm welcome to Pseudodiploria strigosa, also known as Symmetrical Brain Coral!

Colonies form smoothly contoured plates or hemispherical domes. Ridges are evenly rounded and often lack a top groove.

It's important to look at the subtle differences when identifying brain corals as they can be easily confused.

It's Target Species Tuesday! 🎯

Say hello to the Banded Butterflyfish - a small but striking resident of Caribbean coral reefs. 🐠

Often seen swimming in pairs, Banded Butterflyfish are known for forming long-term, monogamous bonds. Couple goals, am I right?
