A recent message from a lovely family reminded me why this work matters ❤️

Their children left not only with memories, but with a deeper understanding of how to protect marine life—and a new perspective they will carry into the future 🐢

This is the kind of tourism we believe in.
Experiences that go beyond observation. That create connection, build awareness, and inspire responsibility for the natural world around us. When people understand ecosystems, they begin to care for them—and that is where real change starts.

The ocean doesn’t just need visitors. It needs advocates 💕

By rethinking the way we travel and engage with nature, we can help shape a generation that is informed, inspired, and committed to protecting our planet 🌎🫶

The ocean is the greatest classroom our children will ever have 🌊

When families explore the sea together, something powerful happens—curiosity grows, confidence builds, and a deep connection to nature begins. These are the moments that shape future ocean guardians.

At We Love the Sea, we go beyond tours. We create meaningful, hands-on ocean education experiences where families learn, explore, and connect with the marine world in a way that inspires lasting change.

Because protecting the ocean starts with understanding it—and that journey begins together.

Learning how to protect the reef is powerful 🐠🌊

Learning how to protect the reef while floating above it is transformative ✨

Our students don’t just hear about conservation — they:
Feel the water around them 💦
See the fish with their own eyes 🐟
Learn science in a living, breathing ecosystem 🪸

This hands-on approach makes marine conservation real, tangible, and unforgettable. When learning is experienced in the ocean itself, it builds deeper understanding, stronger emotional connection, and long-term stewardship.

This is how we create the next generation of ocean ambassadors 🌍💙

Come and see it for yourself!!

PhD Opportunity, deadline 27/02/2026

Title: Assessing climate change effects in the behaviour and physiology of the small spotted catshark Scyliorhinus canicula

Here we propose to use the small spotted catshark Scyliorhinus canicula as a model species, a common and abundant temperate benthic shark in coastal areas of the Mediterranean Sea and the NE Atlantic Ocean.

The goal of the proposed PhD is to use a novel multidisciplinary approach, as to:

A) To evaluate key aspects of shark behaviour

B) To trace behavioural processes to their neurochemical and microbiome mechanisms

C) To measure the cause-and-effect relationship between temperature-dependent changes in specific brain regions
The prospective PhD candidate is expected to integrate the AquaGenPhy group at BIOPOLIS-CIBIO (https://www.cibio.up.pt/en/groups/aquatic-genetics-and-physiology-aquagenphy/) and enrol in the Doctoral Programme in ‘Biodiversity, Genetics & Evolution’ (BIODIV). The prospective PhD candidate is expected to apply for a PhD fellowship in the Spring of 2025, covering stipend and tuition. Costs associated with research work are covered by the project SHOW-IT, SHOW-IT - Shark Ocean Warming-Impact Tracking (Assessing climate change effects in the early life history of top predators). The candidate will work primarily at Aquario Vasco da Gama, in Lisbon.

The candidates should send the following documents to Marta Soares ([email protected]) and Ana Veríssimo ([email protected]) during February (until 27/02/2026):

i) Curriculum vitae;

ii) Motivation Letter (including a brief description of research experience and why you are suitable for the announced position);

iii) Qualifications Certificates (in pdf format);

iv) Other relevant documentation
