Junior high student Regina just picked up her new telephone!

Smart phones are required from first grade, which is a huge burden for working class parents.

HOW YOU CAN HELP
Perhaps some friends back home recently updated to a newer model, and could donate the older one.

Or your company may order New models, and you can pick up the older phones Add very small cost.

muchas gracias

MAN was created from CORN

Vallarta Abuelos explored Mexico’s traditional corn culture, re-creating Mayan legends and participating in the production of tortillas.

First, our teens dramatized the story from the Popul Vuh that explains how the gods created humankind from the sacred corn.

Then the children learned how to soak and grind corn on the metate, which is made from volcanic black rock.

They discovered how tortillas can be made with the press, but also in the old way, by hand. And they heard stories from their mothers —. about grandmothers and villages, and carrying the corn to the mill. Before the days of the tortillería, women spent many hours a day just to create the tortillas that were consumed in large quantities at each meal.

Through these the children gained a greater understanding of the traditions, skills, and hard work that have shaped Mexican family life for generations.

JOSE is building his house

Meet José, one of our seventh-grade scholarship students. José's favorite subject at Ameyali School is English, and he works hard in his studies, practicing at home as he does maintenance jobs with his father.. What makes him especially inspiring, however, is what he does with his family every Sunday.

Each weekend, José and his family travel to Ixtapa, where they are building their future home on a piece of land they have purchased for $400,000 (paid monthly). With their own hands they began by pouring the concrete foundation and are now constructing the walls block by block. At the same time, they are planting fruit trees and creating a garden that will one day provide shade, beauty, and fruit for the family.

For Mexican families, owning a home means much more than simply having property. It represents security, stability, and the peace of mind that comes from knowing they will always have a roof over their heads. During difficult times, such as the COVID pandemic, many families face the loss of jobs and cannot pay rent. Others have seen rents double or even triple as a result of gentrification. When a family has secure shelter, there is always hope of finding a bit of food and overcoming life's challenges.

In a year or two, when the house is complete, José and his family will be able to enjoy the home and garden they worked so hard to create together.

Jose's scholarship sponsors are Abuela Cayenne and Abuelo Brian. Vallarta Abuelos is proud to support students like José, whose determination both in school and at home is helping build a brighter future.

Vallarta Abuelos currently offers 5 classes in math and 4 in English. Also individual tutoring for for learning diverse students, and preparation for the SAT exam.

This is only possible due to the wonderful support of many expat teachers.

Thank you, teachers, for giving your time, patience, and skill to help our Vallarta Abuelos scholarship students. When they join our program, most students are three or more years behind in math due to low standards in local schools. They don’t pick up English until high school.

Because of you, our children are beginning to set higher goals and believe in a better future for themselves. We are truly grateful to each of you.

With appreciation,
Vallarta Abuelos

CHANGING LIVES, ONE COMPUTER AT A TIME

Last week, Mateo, Adriel, Lesley, and Esmeralda received computers donated by generous and thoughtful members of our Vallarta community.

For working class families, many of whom are led by a single mom, purchasing a computer is simply not financially feasible. However, computers have become required tools for completing high school assignments and managing academic responsibilities.

We extend our sincere gratitude to our generous donors and to this compassionate community for supporting these young people in such a significant manner. THANK YOU TO EACH PERSON WHO HAS RECENTLY DONATED A COMPUTER.!
