Sometimes we’re the ones who can help. Sometimes we’re the ones who need help.

Right now, Vallarta Cares needs its community.

Donations have dropped significantly while the number of people coming to us for food and other assistance continues to grow.

And we’ve reached a point we hoped we wouldn’t.

Without additional support, we will have to close our Soup Kitchen during October.

It takes approximately $350,000 MXN ($17,000 USD) each month to keep Vallarta Cares and our programs operating — and right now, our monthly donations aren’t covering even half of that.

But we’re not asking one person to solve this.

We’re asking the community that built Vallarta Cares to help us carry it together.

$10 helps. $25 helps. $50 helps. $100 helps.

Yesterday, we traveled to the rural community of Llano Grande, near El Tuito, to visit Señor Vicente. Not long ago, after a terrible accident involving a swarm of bees and serious medical complications, he lost one of his legs.

When doctors told him it could not be saved, his first thought was not only about walking again. He worried he would no longer be useful—that he could not work in the fields, provide for his wife, or help care for their home.

Losing his leg took away much more than his mobility. It took away part of his independence, his confidence, and the life he knew.

Yesterday, thanks to an extraordinarily generous woman who donated a mobility scooter, we were able to give some of that back.

Señor Vicente could hardly believe it. With tears in his eyes, he told us that he would finally be able to visit his brothers, who live in the same community—just across the soccer field. A short distance for many of us, but one he could no longer cross on crutches.

This is Vallarta Cares: bringing together someone who has something to give with someone whose entire life can be changed by it.

Last week, 78 new donors answered our call for help. We are incredibly grateful—but we fell just 22 people short of our goal of 100.

The truth is, this work is hard right now. There are more people asking for help, more communities needing us, and more work than ever before. Our funds are running low again, even as the need continues to grow.

But we are truly changing lives. Señor Vicente’s smile is proof of that.

58!!! 💙 WE'RE HALFWAY THERE.

Actually, we're a little more than halfway there.

58 new donors have joined our challenge, which means we only need 42 more people to reach 100.

So I have a question:

Why aren't you donating to Vallarta Cares?

Seriously. I want to know.

And while you think about your answer, let me give you 5 reasons why I think you should. 😏

1. We believe in transparency.
We want you to know where your money goes, what we're doing with it, and what your support actually makes possible. Your trust matters just as much as your donation.

2. We're constantly trying to get better at this.
We're professionalizing our organization, improving our systems, learning better and more ethical ways to fundraise, diversifying where our funding comes from, and trying to build something sustainable instead of simply surviving from fundraiser to fundraiser.

3. We know the people we're helping.
We register our beneficiaries, learn about their circumstances and assess their needs. Resources are limited, so we take seriously the responsibility of making sure help reaches the people who genuinely need it.

4. We're here.
Not just when there's a hurricane. Not just when there's a flood. Not just when there's a fundraising campaign.

We're here for the meals, the groceries, the medical appointments, the dental care, the person who walks through our door not knowing where else to go—and yes, we're here when the emergency happens too.

5. We're building Vallarta Cares to last.
This one matters enormously to me.

Vallarta Cares isn't mine. And I don't want it to depend on me, my husband, one big donor or one successful fundraiser.

I want to help build an organization that will still be here years from now, serving this community when none of us currently leading it are around anymore.

💙 27 down. Can we get to 50?

Today reminded us that there are so many ways a community can take care of each other.

This afternoon, people showed up at Jardin Cafe Lounge carrying bags of food for Vallarta Cares.

A bag of rice. Beans. Pasta. Canned food.

Nothing that looks extraordinary on its own.

But those bags will come back to our Center, make their way onto our shelves, and eventually become a meal for someone who needs one or groceries for a family having a difficult month.

That's how so much of this works.

Someone gives what they can.
Someone else gives a few hours.
A business opens its doors.
A donor gives $10 or $100.

And Vallarta Cares makes sure that help gets where it needs to go.

So today we're celebrating 27 people who have joined our 100 for Vallarta challenge — and setting our sights on the next milestone:

Yesterday we started our 100 for Vallarta Challenge with one simple goal: find 100 people willing to help us continue being here for our community.

Because being here matters.

Being here when someone needs a hot meal.
When a family needs food.
When someone can't afford medical or dental care.
When a community is hit by a flood, fire or water emergency.
And sometimes, when someone simply needs to know they haven't been forgotten.

Now we're looking for 87 more.
