I fly a lot for work and pleasure, so sitting in an airplane seat gives me time to look through my drafts, inspiring wishful thinking that some day I’ll have a chance to go through all of them 🤣🤦‍♂️. In the meantime…

In English, we refer to them as “fevers”. In Spanish, they are commonly referred to as “squadrons”. When they fly over a sunken naval vessel like this, they certainly look like squadrons to me.

A fever of heaven. This season has been a blessing in terms of eagle ray encounters. Every dive, every day. I wish I had more time to edit photos, but my company’s work has kept me extremely busy. Still, witness the power of the ocean, where one picture can make me smile for the week.

My final post of 2025 is a set of bookends for my favorite dives this year. Early in the year, I took an amazing trip to Malapascua, Philippines with my ride-or-die . There, I got to spend a significant amount of time with the last species on my list of sharks I wanted to see in my lifetime—the thresher, a shark that ultimately supplanted the great hammerhead as my new favorite. The second picture is the latter bookend of the year. I’ve had to spend a considerable amount of time in Playa del Carmen these last few months for both business and pleasure. While I’ve had to deal with a lot of homesickness, it’s given me the opportunity to spend a lot of time with my favorite ray, the eagle ray. Hundreds of ray photos and videos later (which is great material for my blog and catalog), I can’t help but smile and reflect that once again it’s been a great year underwater.

Here’s to a great 2026. Happy New Year, everyone!

Always love getting up and close to these beauties.

Follow the leader over the wreck. What a great way to end my trip this past Wednesday when the eagle rays decided to bookend my dives. First we saw 12 rays for the first few minutes of my initial dive, although the rays were bashful and the visibility was terrible. We decided to come back to the site later, and for the second dive 8 eagle rays showed up at the end. Luckily, visibility had improved significantly and the rays were playful and patient, allowing for great photo and video opportunities. This is one of the fewer wide angle shots while the others are close-ups. Can’t wait for my next trip.

A whale shark diving back into the depths of the ocean, guided by a kiss of sunlight. Up close, these gentle giants give you a sobering reminder of our meager size in this world—only to feel smaller when you watch this massive shark eventually consumed by the seemingly endless blue of the ocean.

I miss Palau so much. I tried very hard to arrange my schedule so I could jump over from the Philippines, but alas, it wasn’t in the cards this time. I’ll have to settle for the memories for now.
