Durante toda la temporada de anidación, nuestro equipo realiza patrullajes nocturnos en la playa. Es un trabajo que hacemos en silencio y con mucho respeto para no interrumpir el ciclo natural de las tortugas.

¿En qué consiste nuestra labor nocturna?

💙 Identificación: Recorremos la costa para localizar a las hembras que salen a desovar.

💙 Resguardo: Identificamos cada nido y trasladamos los huevos a una zona segura (nuestro corral de anidación).

💙 Protección: Aseguramos que las crías tengan un entorno protegido para desarrollarse sin amenazas externas.

Esta responsabilidad es una pieza clave para el éxito de nuestro programa. Gracias a este esfuerzo constante, logramos que miles de crías lleguen al océano cada año.

Throughout the season, our team conducts night patrols on the beach. We work in silence and with respect to avoid interrupting the turtles' natural nesting cycle.

What our night work involves:

💙 Identification: We monitor the shoreline to locate nesting females.

💙 Security: We identify each nest and relocate the eggs to a secure area, our fenced hatchery or "corral".

💙 Protection: We ensure hatchlings have a safe environment to develop away from external threats.

This responsibility is essential to the success of our program. These constant efforts help thousands of hatchlings reach the ocean every year.

Nesting season starts this May, and we need your help to keep our local beaches safe for the turtles heading our way. Here is a simple guide on how to be a good neighbor to our marine visitors:

💙 Hands Off: Please don't touch the nests. Both eggs and hatchlings are extremely sensitive to human touch.

💙 Lights Out: Avoid using flashlights or bright phone lights on the beach at night. White and LED lights disorient mothers and newborns trying to find the ocean.

💙 Clear the Path: If you're spending the day at the beach, please take your furniture and trash with you. Even a single chair left on the sand can trap a hatchling for days.

💙 See a Turtle? Call us: If you spot a turtle on the sand, please keep your distance and contact our conservation team immediately.

Quintana Roo is more than just a beautiful coastline; it’s a sanctuary for four distinct species of sea turtles. They aren't just passing through; they are the specialized workers keeping our marine ecosystem from falling out of balance.

Here is who is sharing our waters and why their presence is non-negotiable:

💙 The Leatherback: The heavyweight of the ocean. These massive travelers are the only reason jellyfish populations don't take over. Without them, the food chain shifts in a dangerous direction.

💙 The Green Turtle: The ocean’s essential gardener. By grazing on seagrass, they ensure these "underwater nurseries" stay healthy enough to support thousands of other fish species.

Our team captured this incredible moment last season, as a green sea turtle returned to the sea after laying a new nest. But did you know that a single sea turtle mom can lay 2 to 5 clutches of eggs in the same season?

💙 A transparent membrane acts like a natural goggle, protecting their eyes from the elements.
💙 Those salty "tears" you sometimes see are actually a vital way for them to remove excess salt from their bodies.
💙 Incredibly sensitive to light, their eyes help them navigate their long-distance travels by detecting cues from the sun and moon.

With the nesting season (May to October) just a few weeks away, our focus at Villa La Joya is shifting toward the shoreline.
Ensuring the beach is ready for the upcoming months is a collective effort. Here is how we can make sure the path stays clear for the sea turtle mammas:

💙 Clear the Path: Removing beach furniture and debris at sunset prevents unnecessary obstacles for nesting females.

💙 Dim the Lights: Minimizing artificial lighting near the shore keeps the horizon as the primary guide for those navigating toward the dunes.

💙 Level the Sand: Filling in holes and flattening sand structures at the end of the day ensures the "runway" remains smooth and accessible.

These small, intentional choices create a safe space for nesting. We are grateful to have a community that values these shores and the life they support as much as we do.

After incubation, it can take three to seven days for hatchlings to work their way out of the nest. This isn't a solo mission; they hatch almost simultaneously and work together as a group to dig upward. As those at the top scratch at the ceiling, the sand falls to the floor, effectively "elevating" the entire group toward the surface.

This process is exhausting and critical. They are burning through the last of their yolk sac energy just to reach the air. Once they emerge, the real race begins.

At Villa La Joya Sea Turtle Sanctuary, we monitor these nests around the clock to ensure that when they finally make it out, their path to the ocean is clear and safe.

Did you know that ... The oldest sea turtle fossil, Desmatochelys padillai, dates back an incredible 120 million years to the Early Cretaceous period.

This means that sea turtles were already navigating the world’s oceans before the event that wiped out the dinosaurs! 🦕 🦖 They are one of the few ancient reptile lineages that survived the Cretaceous extinction.

Their survival through millennia of changes reminds us how vital it is that we protect them now, so their incredible story can continue for generations to come, don't you think?
