With profound respect and admiration, we extend our heartfelt felicitations to His Majesty The King on the anniversary of his birth in the year of 1948 within the august walls of Buckingham Palace.

From his distinguished service in the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force, to his decades as Prince of Wales championing the environment and the dignity of youth through the Prince’s Trust, and now as sovereign dedicating every breath to the unity and continuity of the Realm, His Majesty has embodied a life not merely lived but offered in steadfast devotion.

May the Almighty grant him continued strength and serenity as he reigns with the quiet fortitude that has characterized his service from the very beginning.

Lady Jane Heathcote Drummond Willoughby (1934-present) was 18 years old on 2nd June 1953 when she was selected as one of Queen Elizabeth II’s six ladies in waiting for her coronation.

Speaking to Pride Magazine, Lady Jane recalls the moment she found out she would be present with The Queen on the day:

“I was at Ashridge College when my parents telephoned me to tell me the news. Maids of Honour at coronations were usually selected from Duke’s daughters first, then the daughters of Earls.

Those selected had to have been presented at court and be unmarried. At the time there were only three or four daughters of Dukes who fitted the bill.

The Willoughby de Eresby title goes back to the Norman Conquest and my father had been Lord Great Chamberlain to George VI, so I was chosen to be one of the six Maids of Honour. My father carried the Sword of King Edward at the ceremony.

We had a number of rehearsals in Westminster Abbey without the Queen as the ceremony was to be televised. A car collected me at 5 o’clock in the morning to take me to the Abbey.

We were given our Norman Hartnell dresses that we wore on the day and I wore a pearl necklace which was a family heirloom.”

King Charles III met Thursday with Pope Leo XIV during a state visit to the Vatican, and the British monarch made history as the first head of the Church of England to pray publicly with a pontiff.

The 76-year-old king, who, by virtue of his role as the monarch also holds the title of supreme governor of the mother church of Anglicanism, flew to Rome Wednesday evening with his wife, Queen Camilla, for what Buckingham Palace described as a “historic” trip.

The royals were greeted at the Apostolic Palace on Thursday morning by a ceremonial guard of honor by the Swiss Guard, the pope’s colorful private bodyguards, before a private meeting with Chicago native Leo in the papal library.
