The Saint Andrew's Society of Mexico

The Saint Andrew's Society of Mexico Since 1893, The Saint Andrew’s Society of Mexico, has been the crown of the Scottish community in Mexico. People interested in all things Scottish welcome.

The Saint Andrews Society of Mexico is a non-profit society that provides Scots, Scottish-Mexicans, and anyone with an interest in Scotland an opportunity for fellowship and cultural expression, through cultural and social events. It has endured many events in Mexico ranging from the flourishing and closing of mining companies, the Revolutionary War, two great wars, the oil expropriation a

nd others. This Scottish Society as its sister societies around the globe holds in great level all Scottish traditions, specially loyalty and friendship. We invite all Scots and Scots descendants living within the Mexican territory to become members. As a disclosure statement, The Saint Andrew’s Society of Mexico is a nonprofit organization aiming for the union of Scots and Scots descendants living in Mexico as well as sharing our tradition with non Scots interested. It holds no political affiliation and does not exclude any person for religion, race, gender and or sexual orientation. All the proceeds from the activities and events support the Society's traditional charities as Fundación Amistad Británico-Mexicana, Banda de Gaitas del Batallón de San Patricio and Christ Church Outreach Programmes.

On this day…

16 April, we remember the Battle of Culloden—now 280 years on.

Fought on the windswept moor near Inverness in 1746, Culloden marked the end of the Jacobite Rising and the last pitched battle on British soil. In less than an hour, over 1,500 men lost their lives, most of them Highlanders.

Today, the battlefield stands as a place of quiet reflection, where visitors walk among the clan markers and mass graves that honour those who fell. It is a solemn reminder of the cost of conflict—and of the lives, names, and stories carried by each stone.

Beyond the history books, Culloden remains a powerful symbol of resilience, identity, and the enduring spirit of the Highlands.

In the years that followed, traditions were suppressed, clans were scattered, and a way of life was challenged. And yet—across generations and across the world—that spirit was never lost.

Here in Mexico, more than 130 years after the founding of our Society, we honour not only those who fell, but the legacy they carried. A legacy that lives on in our traditions, our gatherings, and in each of us who carries Scotland in the heart.

Let friendship and honour unite.

A unicorn… as a national animal? Only in Scotland 🦄🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Not just magic — meaning.
For centuries, the unicorn has symbolised purity, strength, pride, and an untameable spirit — sound familiar?

Fiercely independent, impossible to tame, and never backing down…
Aye, that’s very much Scotland.

From royal arms in the 12th century to today, the unicorn remains a symbol of identity, heritage, and legend.

Happy Unicorn Day!

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿✨ Happy Tartan Day 2026 ✨🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Today we celebrate the pride, history, and identity woven into every tartan.

Our members wear their tartans as a symbol of heritage, belonging, and the enduring spirit of Scotland—wherever we may be.

Why 6 April?
This date marks the signing of the Declaration of Arbroath in 1320—a historic letter sent by Scottish nobles to the Pope, asserting Scotland’s independence and the right of its people to choose their own king.

Around the world, Tartan Day is celebrated with parades, ceilidhs, bagpipes, Highland dancing, and gatherings that bring Scottish communities together to honour their roots.

Tartan—and especially the kilt—was once banned after the Jacobite uprisings, and later became a powerful symbol of national identity. Because tartan is more than a pattern… it’s a story we carry with us.

Are you Scottish by birth, descent or at heart?
Join our celebration today by sharing a photo of you wearing tartan, tag us .andrews.mx and we will share in our stories 🫶

There is a moment, quiet yet deeply symbolic, that takes place in St Andrew’s Societies around the world, when leadership is not announced, but placed.

A medal. A medallion. A chain of office.
When a new Chieftain receives the medal—whether in New York, Toronto, or Hong Kong —they are not just stepping into a role. They are joining a lineage. The medal becomes a reminder that leadership is temporary—but legacy is not.

The photos in this post show just a few of these medals, from different Scottish societies across the world.
Different designs. Different histories. And yet… unmistakably the same spirit. St Andrew’s cross, thistles and historic mottos are always found.

Because no matter how far from Scotland we are, we have the same quiet understanding of what it means to belong to something that came long before us.

For more than 130 years, the Saint Andrew’s Society of Mexico has safeguarded this tradition, passed from one Chieftain to the next since the very beginning.

Today, that tradition continues. Our members have elected a new Chieftain for the coming year, ready to carry forward the legacy, the responsibility, and the spirit of our Society.

A reminder that this is not about one person; about all those who came before and all those yet to come. It is an honour to carry it forward, and, when the time comes, to pass it on.

☘️Happy St Patrick’s Day 🇮🇪 Lá Fhéile Pádraig sona daoibh!💚

Today, everyone feels a wee bit Irish…
except the Scots — we’re always Scottish. 😉

After all, our histories have crossed paths for centuries. From the Gaelic-speaking kingdom that once linked both shores, to the music, traditions, and stories that travelled back and forth across the sea, Scotland and Ireland have long been neighbours, kin, and partners in mischief — each deeply proud of their land, their heritage, and their traditions.

So while St Patrick belongs to Ireland, the spirit of the day — community, culture, and a good celebration — is something we know well.

From Scotland in Mexico, we celebrate not just Ireland, but the wider Celtic family — a sisterhood of nations, shared heritage, and plenty of reasons to raise a glass together.

Slàinte to Ireland — may your day be full of music, laughter, and just the right amount of chaos 🍻☘️

From the heart of Mexico, the Saint Andrew’s Society sends warm wishes to every mum, gran, and mother figure in our community — near or far.
Rooted in Scottish tradition and connected across borders, we celebrate the women who shape our lives with courage, care, and endless grace.

🌷Today we recognise the women whose dedication, talent and generosity strengthen our community.

For almost a century, women were not allowed to be members of the Saint Andrew’s Society of Mexico. Today, we are proud that women are part of the Society — contributing their ideas, energy and leadership to its future.

Their participation helps preserve Scottish traditions, organise gatherings and keep our community thriving far from Scotland.

On International Women’s Day, we pay tribute to the women everywhere who continue opening doors, building communities and shaping a more inclusive future. 💜

A moment to reflect on the progress made, and the work that still lies ahead.
