Happy International Sea Turtle Day! 🐢🌊

Sea turtles have existed for more than 100 million years, yet today many species face growing threats from habitat loss, plastic pollution, fishing gear, climate change, and poaching.

At Our Eco Planet, we are passionate about supporting community-based conservation efforts that help protect nesting beaches, sea turtle nests, and hatchlings. Every protected nest and every hatchling reaching the ocean matters.

Today we celebrate these incredible animals and the people around the world working to protect them.

Along the Pacific coast of Mexico, beautiful sandy beaches provide critical nesting habitat for sea turtles. In Lo de Marcos, Olive Ridley sea turtles come ashore under the cover of darkness to lay their eggs. Beginning one of nature’s most incredible journeys. 🐢

Our Eco Planet organizes hands-on sea turtle conservation experiences in Mexico focused on real conservation work, including beach patrols, nest protection, hatchling releases, and community-based conservation efforts along the beautiful coast of Lo de Marcos.

These experiences are more than just travel opportunities; they are a chance to contribute directly to wildlife conservation and connect with like-minded people passionate about protecting our planet.

Stay tuned for future expedition announcements and conservation opportunities!

Olive Ridley sea turtle eggs are still heavily poached in many parts of the world, despite sea turtles being protected species. The eggs are illegally sold for food and for supposed aphrodisiac properties.

The sad reality is that the poachers themselves often make very little money, while middlemen, restaurants, and illegal wildlife traders profit the most. Meanwhile, widespread egg poaching can have devastating impacts on sea turtle populations, removing thousands of hatchlings before they ever have a chance to reach the ocean. With so few hatchlings naturally surviving to adulthood, every nest plays an important role in the species' future. 🐢

Protecting nests and supporting community-based conservation gives these tiny hatchlings a fighting chance.

On busy nights, several female sea turtles come ashore to lay their eggs. Under the cover of darkness, we carefully collect the eggs and bring them back to the hatchery, where they are reburied safely in cooler boxes. Protected from poachers, dogs, beachgoers, and other threats.

Each nest is placed in its own box, and detailed data is recorded to track development and hatching success. This is hands-on conservation, giving every nest a better chance. 🐢✨
