• MAKO SHARK TAGGING PROJECT •
We have just tagged 2 new mako sharks of the coast of Baja California Sur, Mexico in collaboration with and .
The first mako is a 1.1m female named Tati that we tagged on Wednesday March 27 2024.
The second one is a 1.3m male named Ziga that we tagged on Sunday March 31 2024.
Both tagging procedure went well and both sharks are completely fine.
Their tags already pinged several times allowing us to already follow their movements !
Tati recently swam more than 105km in 24 hours !
With these 2 new Makos tagged, we have now tagged 5 of them in total since last year !
Hopefully, the data we’ll gather from these tags will help us better understand these mysterious ocean predators and will allow us to keep moving forward in our constant fight to protect them !

• MAKO SHARK RESEARCH •

April 2023, we started a long term tagging research with Mako sharks in collaboration with , & .

But why did we decide to study Makos ?

- These sharks are a very charismatic species and could be used to protect entire areas and, therefore, other marine species

- They have never been tagged in Baja California Sur so very little is known about their movement and behavior

- They are highly threatened by fisheries

The population of Mako sharks is declining globally. The same is being observed in Baja California Sur and the Gulf of California where we are conducting the research.

The Makos caught by local artisanal shark fisheries are getting smaller and smaller with time. This shows that the population is facing too much pressure and individuals don’t have time to grow, reach sexual maturity and reproduce which could ultimately cause a complete collapse of the population.

Overfishing, by-catch and their slow reproductive cycle are making Makos highly vulnerable.

• MAKO SHARK RESEARCH •

April 2023, we teamed up with , & to start an ambitious research project about Mako sharks !

We tagged 3 makos in the southern part of the Sea of Cortez in order to better understand how they live, what they rely on to survive as well as their migration patterns.

Makos have never been tagged in that area so it’ll be valuable data to better understand them and ultimately better protect them !

For this research, we are using GPS Satellite Tags that are installed on the shark’s dorsal fin. Every time the shark’s fin comes out of the water, the GPS sends us the exact time and location of the animal allowing us to follow their movements.

We tagged 3 individuals, all of them juveniles, respectively measuring 1.60m, 2.10m and 1.40m.

In a continuity of our collaboration with , we really wanted to involve the local shark fishermen we’ve already been working with. In order to be able to tag the sharks, we have to have them hooked on the side of the boat. Once tagged, all 3 sharks were released and swam away safely.

First results showed us that 1 shark started swimming north in the Sea of Cortez while the 2 others traveled south towards the Pacific Ocean.

• 2023 IMPACT REPORT •

We just wrapped up our most impactful year of shark conservation !

Therefore, we are presenting to you our 2023 Impact Report:

✔️ We have started our first scientific research in collaboration with , and for which we tagged 3 mako sharks in Baja California Sur with GPS satellite tags in order to better understand their movement, migration and behavior and ultimately better protect them !

✔️ We led a social media campaign to raise awareness about shark killing tournaments in the US. The campaign gathered more than 1’300’000 views and was supported by major ocean conservation NGOs such as and more !

✔️ We launched our Youth Awareness Program to educate kids about the importance of sharks. We gave 16 school presentations to 30 classes for a total of more than 660 kids !

✔️ We gave several shark conservation conferences in different countries. More than 250 people attended our talks !

✔️ We put together a social media campaign in association with to raise awareness about Great Hammerhead Sharks. The goal was to raise awareness about the importance and fragility of these sharks but also to promote a positive image of these animals that are too often pictured as monsters. The campaign gathered more than 5’700’000 views !

✔️ In 2023, we kept shooting for the feature length documentary about shark conservation we are producing. We documented 5 locations that are playing a key role in the disappearance of sharks.

✔️ We led 4 expeditions with 36 participants in 3 different countries: Mexico, Maldives and French Polynesia. The goal of these expeditions is to give everyone the opportunity to join us and learn more about shark on the field. If you want to join us this year, we have 4 new expeditions in 2024 !

• GENEVA PHOTO SHOW 2023 •

Yesterday, DSG founder gave a conference at the Geneva Photo Show 2023 in collaboration with .ch.at !

It’s been awesome to talk about filmmaking/photography and how images are extremely important in our fight for shark and ocean conservation !

It’s been also a great opportunity to raise awareness about sharks, the threats they are facing, why they are disappearing, why they are so important for not only the survival of our oceans but our own survival as well and what each and everyone of us can do to help them !

• DATA COLLECTION •

Here are some photos captured by from a day working on the field collecting valuable data about shark fisheries in Baja California Sur, Mexico with .whitehead from in collaboration with from .

Collecting data about the size, weight and therefore age of sharks captured by shark fisheries is extremely valuable and important as it allows us to estimate the impact and pressure of these fisheries on the survival of the local shark population.

In these photos, you’re seeing a juvenile Mako shark that was fished by the fishermen we collaborate with.

This Mako shark, like most Makos fished in that area, is quite small and hasn’t had time to reach sexual maturity yet meaning that it hasn’t had time to reproduce…

If, with time, the average size of sharks being fished in a certain area decreases, it means that they are facing too much pressure not allowing them to grow and reproduce which can ultimately lead to the complete disappearance of certain species in a certain area.

This is what we are currently experiencing in Baja California Sur, Mexico as most of the Mako sharks we see (through diving or fishing) are juveniles. We also observe a decrease in size of the sharks that are fished over the years.

This is why it is extremely important now more than ever, not only to take measures to protect these animals but also to help these local fishermen find alternative sources of incomes in order for them to be able to make a living without having to fish for sharks.

• YOUTH AWARENESS PROGRAM •

We just had the opportunity to expand our Youth Awareness Program with new shark conservation presentations to the school kids !

In 2 days, we’ve been able to give our talk in front of more than 400 kids !

All of them were so into it, asking so many questions !

It’s always a pleasure being able to raise awareness about the importance of sharks, the issues they are facing and what can be done to help them especially in front of kids, the future generation of ocean guardians !

• F.P. EXPEDITION II •

We just wrapped up our 2nd French Polynesia Expedition of the year in association with which is also wrapping up our 2023 expeditions !

We had such an amazing time with a great crew of passionate ocean lovers !

The rain didn’t stop us and we encountered so many animals !

Lots of Humpbacks as usual ! On our 2nd day we spent time with 4 Humpbacks: Mom, baby and 2 escorts and the next day we had 3 Humpbacks with Rough toothed dolphins, what a show !

Huge thanks to everyone joining our expeditions for their trust and for supporting our work to help protect sharks as 100% of the proceeds of all our expeditions are going to our shark conservation projects !

If you want to join us next year, we have 4 expeditions scheduled:

- Baja California in March 2024 for Mako sharks, Blue sharks, Sea lions, possibly Orcas and Mobula rays while working with a community of shark fishermen that are slowly quitting shark fishing to make a living thanks to eco tourism !

- Maldives in April 2024 for the ultimate shark expedition: Tiger sharks (lots of them !), Thresher sharks, Silvertip sharks, Silky sharks, Oceanic whitetip sharks, Oceanic manta rays and more !

- French Polynesia again in September and October 2024 with Humpbacks !
