We work tightly with coastal communities and stakeholders to obtain as much information as possible. Together, we are establishing a baseline of biological knowledge of the giant sea bass in Mexican waters. Goal 1: Data
Build a database that integrates records from fishery landings, market surveys, fishery-independent surveys, scientific collections, local knowledge, and photographs of giant sea b
ass caught/recorded in Mexican waters. The database will contain information on length and weight of organisms and other important biological parameters. Goal 2: Fishery monitoring program
Incorporate the giant sea bass into the biological fishery monitoring program (BFMP) currently run by Mexican NGO’s and fishing cooperatives. This BFMP currently operates in El Rosario, Punta Abreojos, Isla Natividad, and Bahia Magdalena, important commercial and recreational fishing communities of Baja. Goal 3: Mapping
Create a Geographic Information System (GIS) that integrates all the records incorporated in the information repository (Goal 1) and the biological fishery monitoring program (Goal 2). The GIS will incorporate geographic and biometric data, s*x, and reproductive maturity when available. Goal 4: Science communication
We will produce a technical species fact sheet and an outreach booklet that will report the major findings of our work. The fact sheet will serve both decision makers and organizations seeking reliable information on the threatened species. The booklet will enable us to share information with small-scale fishers, schools in coastal communities, and the general public to raise awareness of the important role of this species in the marine ecosystem. Colaboramos estrechamente con las comunidades costeras y partes interesadas para obtener información valiosa de primera mano. Juntos, estamos estableciendo la base del conocimiento biológico del mero gigante en aguas mexicanas.
