Eternal Anchor is a ministry dedicated to meeting the needs of children with special needs in Baja California. We provide a loving home for children with special needs who don’t have a family or whose family is incapable of caring for them. We reach out to the community to help preserve families by educating and equipping them with tools and resources that will assist their children in reaching th

eir God-given potential. Our goal is to meet the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of as many children with special needs as God brings to us.

Disability has long been misunderstood in many cultures, and Mexico is no exception. However, thanks to tireless advocacy, education, and organizations like Eternal Anchor, the narrative is shifting. Here are five common misconceptions about disability in Mexican culture, and how they’re being challenged every day:

✦ “𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗽𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲.” For years, many have viewed disability through a lens of stigma. But through awareness campaigns and community programs, we’re embracing that people with disabilities are valuable members of society.
✦ “𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗻’𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘁𝘆.” Eternal Anchor believes in the power of every individual, regardless of ability. Our programs focus on developing skills, building confidence, and empowering people with disabilities to lead meaningful lives.
✦ “𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗮 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆.” With proper support, individuals with disabilities can live independently and contribute actively to their families and communities. Our school and therapy services equip people with the tools they need to thrive.
✦ “𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗻’𝘁 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀.” At Eternal Anchor’s school, we break barriers by providing quality education for children with disabilities who would otherwise be excluded. Inclusion is not just an option—it’s a necessity.
✦ “𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗯𝗲 𝗵𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗻.” The importance of visibility and inclusion is something Eternal Anchor champions every day. We believe in celebrating every person for who they are, empowering them to advocate for themselves and others.

Together, we’re creating a world where people with disabilities are celebrated for their abilities and the impact they make in every aspect of life.

𝗔𝗿𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗼𝗼𝗿𝘀.

This week, members of our Friendship Club Without Barriers created collages using shells, driftwood, stones, sand, and other treasures gathered from local beaches.

For young adults with disabilities, art therapy is about so much more than making something beautiful. It creates space for choice, creativity, focus, sensory exploration, communication, and confidence. It gives each person a way to express ideas and emotions that may not always come easily through words.

As they sorted textures, arranged pieces, made decisions, and built something of their own, our members were practicing fine motor skills, problem-solving, patience, and self-expression. They were also doing something every person deserves to do: creating, participating, and being proud of what they made.

At Eternal Anchor, inclusion means making room for every person’s gifts to be seen and celebrated. Sometimes that looks like a classroom, a therapy session, a community outing, or a conversation.

And sometimes it looks like shells, sand, driftwood, glue, and a beautiful piece of art made by hand.

Empowering lives through education means meeting each student exactly where they are—and walking with them, step by step, toward possibility. It means honoring each unique way of learning, celebrating growth in all its forms, and holding space for every child to feel safe, supported, and seen.

At Eternal Anchor, our school is more than a classroom. It’s a place where communication takes many forms. Where mobility devices open doors. Where progress looks like a smile, a breakthrough, or simply the courage to try again.

This is what hope looks like when it’s practiced daily. This is what you make possible.

Not every moment is loud. Not every victory comes with a spotlight. But every person—every single one—is worthy of being seen, heard, and celebrated.

At Eternal Anchor, our work is slow and steady. Showing up day after day. Listening. Walking alongside others. It's not about fixing people. It's about seeing them. Valuing them. Making room for them to show up exactly as they are.

And when that happens—when love meets someone right where they are—you begin to understand that inclusion isn't a strategy. It's a way of life.

Communication opens the door to connection.

At Eternal Anchor, Mexican Sign Language is not an extra. It is part of how students learn, play, build friendships, and express what they know. In our setting, where some students are Deaf, some are nonverbal, and others communicate in different ways, sign language helps create a classroom where more students can participate fully.

Sometimes that looks like a lesson. Sometimes it looks like a conversation. And sometimes it looks like a simple game of hangman becoming a moment of learning, laughter, and belonging.

Every sign matters. Every student’s voice matters.

Something shifted for Dominic this week.

He recently changed classes and joined the Piratas, and he's already mastering the kind of everyday skills that quietly change everything. When his teacher Miriam told him how proud she was, he responded the only way that felt right.

That arm says it all — and so does that smile. This is what's possible when a child is seen, supported, and given the chance to grow.

Welcome to Eternal Anchor, Kathryn Whaley and Sara Ray!

Kathryn and Sara are our first physical therapy interns of the year from UTMB Health (University of Texas Medical Branch) in Galveston, Texas. They will be with us for eight weeks, working alongside our Health and Therapy Services team under the guidance of Erin Cottos, their former professor and our physical therapist and Global Health Coordinator.

“This partnership with UTMB is a gift on so many levels,” said Erin (center). “Not only does it bring fresh energy and perspective to Eternal Anchor, but it gives future physical therapists a chance to practice in a real-world setting that challenges and grows their clinical and human skills. Internships like this bridge the gap between classroom learning and truly meaningful professional practice.”

During their time here, Kathryn and Sara will work hands-on with clients, gaining invaluable experience in adaptive care, cross-cultural practice, and community-based therapy.

“I wanted to participate in this internship to experience the community aspect of global health, and to be part of something bigger than myself,” said Kathryn.

“And I’ve always had a passion for missional work, and to do that in a community setting is what global health is all about,” added Sara.

Kathryn and Sara will receive their Doctor of Physical Therapy degrees from UTMB in August. We are grateful to welcome them into the Eternal Anchor community and excited for all they will learn, share, and contribute during their time in the San Quintin Valley.

Crazy hair. Full hearts. Big joy.

Today at the Friendship Club Without Barriers, our young adults showed up with wild hairstyles, bright smiles, and plenty of personality for Crazy Hairstyle Day. There was food that they prepared, games, a piñata, laughter, and the kind of fellowship that reminds us how much belonging matters.

Events like this are fun. But they are also more than fun.

For young adults with disabilities, days like today create space for friendship, confidence, creativity, communication, and community. They are a reminder that everyone deserves places where they are known, welcomed, celebrated, and free to be themselves, even if “themselves” includes hair standing three inches taller than usual.

At Eternal Anchor, inclusion looks like shared meals, silly games, real friendships, and a community where joy is not an extra. It is part of the work.

At Eternal Anchor, we believe something powerful happens when no one is left behind.

When individuals, families, communities, business leaders, and local governments come together around inclusion—walls fall, lives change, and the impossible becomes possible.

Last May, Dr. Justin Sherfey and his team from Washington State visited Eternal Anchor to provide orthopedic consultations for children throughout the San Quintin Valley. But their impact didn't end when the team went home.

During their visit, Erin Cottos, our physical therapist and coordinator of global health initiatives, received hands-on training in clubfoot casting. The team also left casting materials behind so that care could continue long after their time in Mexico.

Soon after, Erin and our Health and Therapy Services team met this young girl and her family. For seven weeks, Erin provided serial casting for her clubfoot, helping guide her foot into a better position and supporting her long-term mobility.

Recently, she and her family came to our Adaptive Equipment Workshop for a follow-up visit. And then we watched her walk independently. That moment made everyone’s day.

This is why shared learning matters. When visiting professionals come alongside local teams with humility, training, and practical support, children and families continue receiving care after the visit ends. Skills stay in the community. Follow-up becomes possible. Mobility improves. And a child takes steps toward greater independence, confidence, and participation in daily life.

At Eternal Anchor, this is the kind of partnership we believe in: care that is personal, practical, and rooted in dignity.
