A rare black tiger—a melanistic Bengal tiger—has been sighted again in Odisha’s Similipal Tiger Reserve, India. These tigers aren’t a separate species but a genetic variant caused by a mutation that makes their stripes unusually thick and close, giving them a dark, almost black coat.

Their continued presence and breeding in the wild suggest that Similipal’s ecosystem is healthy and thriving, supporting a stable prey base and strong conservation efforts. However, since these tigers exist only in this reserve and in very small numbers (around 18), they remain vulnerable to threats like poaching, habitat loss, and inbreeding. The sighting serves both as a symbol of hope for wildlife conservation and a reminder of the need for ongoing protection.
