On this World Monkey Day, the IUCN Primate Specialist Group Section on Human-Primate Interactions celebrates the mantled howler monkey (Alouatta palliata).

Mantled howlers were once considered a low conservation priority, but their populations are declining and they have been reclassified as Vulnerable to Extinction on the IUCN Red List. While howler monkeys survive well in modified landscapes, they do not like to travel on the ground so are threatened by transportation infrastructure. Howlers often use power lines to cross roads, resulting in high rates of injury and mortality from electrocution.
