In the heart of Malawi, a small village named Sumizi in Zomba thrives with traditions deeply rooted in gender roles. The children are taught the specific roles that they are supposed to work on as a girl or as a boy. No one is to switch roles because it is taboo to do so. When a man is seen doing house chores, people say, "anadyesedwa khwakhwanana ndi akazawo."
These specific gender roles limit what a man and a woman can do in society. Although such is the case in Sumizi village, a determined 25-year-old woman named Tiyamike set out to challenge these norms. She is a respected member of the community, known for her compassion and dedication. Tiyamike recognized the importance of ending these norms for the brighter future of society. She used door-to-door and mobile campaigns, among others, in her quest for change.
Tiyamike engages in open conversations with the village elders, highlighting the shared values of love, compassion, and unity. During these meetings, there is a local drama group that accompanies her. The dramas portray how threatening and limiting the strict gender roles are at an individual and community level.
Tiyamike also shares stories of untapped potential within the village. She recounted tales of women in neighboring communities who had defied gender expectations and brought prosperity to their villages. Through these narratives, she stirred the villagers' emotions, encouraging them to empathize with the aspirations of their daughters, sisters, and mothers who yearned for a chance to shine beyond traditional roles.
Tiyamike presented a compelling case. She highlighted the economic benefits of tapping into the talents of all community members. There has been hesitation in accepting the new ways in society, with people saying, "Chikhalidwe chathu sichimenechi." Tiyamike has appealed to the chiefs to help bring change.
Hope International has recognized Tiyamike's efforts in trying to bring change in society. Thus, it will work hand in hand to civic educate the people through the ZATONSE project.
Tiyamike and Hope International Mw are looking forward to an inclusive society in Malawi.
