Youth Acting Together (YATO) is a youth-led non-profit organisation based in Zomba, Malawi, established on 20 October 2005. Since its inception, YATO has worked to empower young people and marginalized communities to participate in cultural preservation, social justice, and sustainable development. Our foundation lies in the belief that safeguarding cultural heritage is not only about protecting the past but also about strengthening community identity, resilience, and future sustainability.
Mission:
To safeguard cultural heritage, empower youth, and promote inclusive development through advocacy, education, and community-led action.
Main Activities:
• Cultural Preservation & Heritage Protection: Advocating for the safeguarding of Malawi’s cultural heritage sites, indigenous traditions, and intangible practices. YATO engages communities to protect sacred and historical sites that face threats from deforestation, urban expansion, and unsustainable exploitation.
• Emergency Cultural Response: Mobilizing youth and communities to provide rapid interventions where cultural heritage is at risk due to human activity, climate change, or social instability, while advocating for sustainable protection measures.
• Youth Leadership & Civic Engagement: Training and mentoring young people to serve as cultural custodians, social justice advocates, and community leaders.
• Human Rights & Social Justice Advocacy: Promoting inclusive policies that respect cultural rights as human rights while advancing the rights of women, girls, and marginalized groups.
• Environmental Conservation & Climate Justice: Linking culture and environment by restoring degraded landscapes of cultural significance, such as Zomba Mountain and Sadzi Hill, which have been heavily affected by deforestation.
• Community Development & Livelihoods: Supporting alternative and sustainable livelihoods to reduce pressure on cultural and natural resources
