As Malawi prepares for this year’s 16 Days of Activism against gender-based violence (GBV), YATO is also urging everyone to take collective responsibility in tackling the problem.

YATO believes that fighting GBV among youths, women and children must begin at household and community levels, emphasising that no one can combat the issue alone.

“As we commemorate this year’s 16 Days of Activism, YATO calls on all Malawians to renew their commitment to ending all forms of gender-based violence. This period is crucial as it highlights the urgent need to address violence affecting women, girls, men, and boys across the country.

YATO through its Executive Director (Norah Soko) also is appealing for financial and material support from well-wishers to help the organisation conduct awareness campaigns during the commemoration.

The 16 Days of Activism are observed globally from 25 November to 10 December each year.

For the past years YATO has done the following:

Restoration of Culturally Significant Landscapes (Zomba Mountain & Sadzi Hill): Coordinated large-scale tree planting and land restoration programmes to protect landscapes of cultural and ecological value. This included managing contractors, mobilising volunteers, and liaising with local authorities.

Heritage Protection Campaigns in Zomba from 2023 to 2024: Successfully led advocacy and awareness initiatives on safeguarding indigenous traditions, sacred sites, and cultural assets threatened by environmental degradation and human activity.

Emergency Response and Community Protection: Coordinated urgent interventions to protect cultural workers and local heritage, demonstrating the ability to respond quickly, mobilise resources, and ensure continuity of cultural initiatives under risk.

Youth Acting Together (YATO) is a youth-led non-profit organisation based in Zomba, Malawi, established on 20 October 2005. Since its inception, YATO has worked to empower young people and marginalized communities to participate in cultural preservation, social justice, and sustainable development. Our foundation lies in the belief that safeguarding cultural heritage is not only about protecting the past but also about strengthening community identity, resilience, and future sustainability.
Mission:
To safeguard cultural heritage, empower youth, and promote inclusive development through advocacy, education, and community-led action.
Main Activities:
• Cultural Preservation & Heritage Protection: Advocating for the safeguarding of Malawi’s cultural heritage sites, indigenous traditions, and intangible practices. YATO engages communities to protect sacred and historical sites that face threats from deforestation, urban expansion, and unsustainable exploitation.
• Emergency Cultural Response: Mobilizing youth and communities to provide rapid interventions where cultural heritage is at risk due to human activity, climate change, or social instability, while advocating for sustainable protection measures.
• Youth Leadership & Civic Engagement: Training and mentoring young people to serve as cultural custodians, social justice advocates, and community leaders.
• Human Rights & Social Justice Advocacy: Promoting inclusive policies that respect cultural rights as human rights while advancing the rights of women, girls, and marginalized groups.
• Environmental Conservation & Climate Justice: Linking culture and environment by restoring degraded landscapes of cultural significance, such as Zomba Mountain and Sadzi Hill, which have been heavily affected by deforestation.
• Community Development & Livelihoods: Supporting alternative and sustainable livelihoods to reduce pressure on cultural and natural resources
