Emmanuel International Malawi, in partnership with CAVWOC and with support from Global Affairs Canada and Emmanuel International Canada, has successfully completed a training for District and Community Referral Focal Persons in Machinga District on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) documentation, referral, reporting, and the Digital Referral and Reporting System (DRRS).

The training equipped key stakeholders with knowledge and skills to improve coordination, case management, and survivor-centred response to GBV within communities.

As part of this initiative, tablets and computers were officially handed over to stakeholders to enhance data collection, reporting, and case tracking through the Digital Referral and Reporting System.

This marks an important step towards strengthening systems that support and protect survivors of GBV in Machinga District.

Cases on gender-based violence have jumped from around 20,800 in 2022 to at least 25,000 at the close of year 2025.

Deputy director of gender affairs in the Ministry of Gender, Children, Disability Affairs, Ronald Phiri, says major victims remain women and children, urging stakeholders to unite to reverse the trend.

Phiri said this today when Emmanuel International in partnership with CAVWOC with support from Global Affairs Canada donated tablets and computers to stakeholders aimed at enhancing reporting and data collection regarding GBV.

Phalombe District Director of Planning and Development, Kelvin Harawa, lauded the organization for the initiative, adding that the digital referral and reporting system is a plus in combating gender based violence in the district.

District Coordinator for Emmanuel International under Titukule Azimayi project, Catherine Chirambo, says paper-based reporting faced challenges in reporting cases of GBV which affected management of the vice in the district.

Gender Officer for Phalombe District Council, James Gubudu, says empowering Gender Champions can help reduce gender-based violence cases in the district.

He was speaking after Emmanuel International and the Centre for Alternatives for Victimized Women and Children (CAVWOC), in partnership with Africycle, donated 75 bicycles to Gender Champions from five Traditional Authorities.

Gubudu said the bicycles will improve response times to GBV cases. One of the beneficiaries, Emily Dyson, welcomed the support, saying it will help address mobility challenges in their work.

The donation is part of the Titutukule Azimayi project being implemented by Emmanuel International and CAVWOC with support from Global Affairs Canada.
