Disasters do not wait, and neither should communities.

Climate-related disasters continue to place vulnerable communities at risk, especially where early warning systems and preparedness structures remain weak. To strengthen community resilience and preparedness, YODEP, with funding from Save the Children Malawi, conducted a two-day training for five Village Disaster Risk Management Committees (VDRMCs) under the Anticipatory Action (AA) Project in T/As Mwambo and Lamusi, Zomba District, from 11–12 May.

The training equipped participants with knowledge and practical skills in early action, climate forecasting, trigger monitoring, and the use of Climate Information Services to respond to hazards such as floods, droughts, and storms before they escalate into disasters.

Participants also strengthened their capacity in community-based risk monitoring and early warning communication to support the timely dissemination of alerts within their communities. At the end of the sessions, each VDRMC developed an action plan to guide timely, community-led interventions aimed at reducing disaster impacts and protecting vulnerable populations.

Youth for Development and Productivity (YODEP), under the Abwenzi A Ana Program funded by Save the Children Malawi, facilitated a case review meeting in Bilila, Ntcheu, bringing together case workers and Child Protection Workers (CPWs) from TA Makwangwala and Nkutumula.

The session focused on reviewing child protection cases recorded in 2026 while also addressing key challenges in case management. Through practical discussions, hands-on documentation exercises, and mentorship from district social welfare officers, participants strengthened coordination and accountability in handling child protection cases, as well as improving follow-up and reporting processes.

The meeting reinforced a shared commitment to ensuring timely and effective action on all reported cases, resulting in improved case handling and better protection and outcomes for children.

Youth for Development and Productivity (YODEP), under the Abwenzi A Ana programme funded by Save the Children International, has trained 13 Group Village Headpersons, each accompanied by church leaders, child protection workers, and community initiators in Ntcheu District, to address harmful cultural practices that continue to violate children’s rights.

Speaking at the end of the one-week training, YODEP Programmes Manager Joy Mwandama said these groups are often at the forefront of decision-making in communities and can play a crucial role in addressing practices that promote child marriages and school dropouts.

In his remarks, Sub-Traditional Authority Mkutumula said the training was an eye-opener for him and his people, as they have been equipped with knowledge on how to identify child trafficking and have formulated by-laws that will help address such challenges.

Ntcheu District Social Welfare Officer Rodwell Chunga said cases of child abuse and trafficking in the district continue to occur under the watch of traditional and community leaders due to lack of awareness, saying that such trainings are of paramount importance in addressing the problem.
