MUST YouthMappers Hosts Its First Event of the Semester

On 26 September 2026, MUST YouthMappers had the privilege of hosting its first-ever joint geospatial tools training of the semester, bringing together students and young mappers passionate about geospatial technologies.

The training was led by students from the Catholic University of Malawi (CUNIMA) YouthMappers Chapter, who shared their knowledge and experience in various emerging geospatial technologies and tools.

The session provided an opportunity for both beginners and experienced mappers to gain practical, hands-on experience while discovering new and updated techniques for working with spatial data and conducting spatial analysis. The interactive nature of the training also created a platform for students from different institutions to exchange knowledge, ideas, and experiences.

“It was amazing. I didn’t expect that I would learn this much. These people are brilliant, and they helped me discover new skills that I will definitely use in my upcoming projects,” said Tedson Jaffet, a third-year GIS student who was also among the trainers.

The Guest of Honour, Dr. Tchuwa, congratulated the MUST YouthMappers leadership for successfully organizing the training and commended the chapter for remaining active and creating opportunities for students.

“I am very happy to see this, and I didn’t expect that you could do such amazing things. I am also happy that the MUST YouthMappers Chapter is active and involved in many projects. Keep the spirit alive, because it is through gatherings like these that you experience real-world work and build networks by engaging with students from different institutions. That is how a country is built.”

The CUNIMA YouthMappers President also expressed appreciation to MUST YouthMappers for providing them with the opportunity to share their knowledge and skills with fellow students. He described the invitation as an honour and an opportunity to contribute to the growth of the geospatial community.

The event concluded with the Patron of MUST YouthMappers presenting certificates of recognition to three outgoing members in appreciation of their contributions and service to the chapter.

The training was more than just a technical session, it was an opportunity to learn, share, connect, and build the next generation of geospatial professionals.

WE DID IT! WHAT AN INCREDIBLE START TO THE SEMESTER!

It was inspiring to see so many new faces, bright smiles, and real enthusiasm as students discovered what MUST YouthMappers is all about!

Our President, Daniel Mwitha, kicked off the session with an insightful introduction to YouthMappers, which was further elaborated by our Vice President, Mark Zacharia, giving everyone a clear picture of our vision and opportunities.

A major highlight of the event was hearing directly from two of our inspiring female leaders:
🔹 Ruth Harawa (4th Year, Disaster Risk Management)
🔹 Tamandani Miranda Kaumphawi (3rd Year, Geo-Information and Earth Observation Science)

They shared how actively participating in YouthMappers’ practical projects helped them build real-world experience, expand their skill set, and collaborate with global communities.

"I have gained a lot of skills from YouthMappers not just certificates, but real practical experience. Because of this, I am currently serving as a GIS tutor at Yaza-IT, a tech platform founded by a MUBAS student." Ruth Harawa
