Ambiri akugona, Koma MUST youthmappers once again demonstrates its commitment to changing lives through mapping as the chapter zealously participated in African Map cup. Contributing on project #41324 (Community Resource Mapping for Resilience (TA Kalumbu)), it was truly remarkable to see so many young fellows unite to have an impact on their society. We truly don't just build maps, we build mappers. At the mapathon, members were also urged to not wait for huge mapathons like this to contribute, instead they should continuously work on various projects available on HOT tasking Manager. What a powerful way to kick off the semester! 🔥🔥🔥
Yesterday evening we held our very first YouthMappers meeting and the room was buzzing with curiosity, ambition, and fresh ideas. We created OpenStreetMap accounts, got JOSM installed and running, and laid out our plans for the semester ahead.

At YouthMappers, we don’t just build maps. We build mappers. 🌍💻✨

We don't just build maps we build mappers. Quite a catchy slogan, but is being put into practice? Well for our chapter at MUST we are proud to say it is; as our own president Hope Matemba presented a training on Mapping with JOSM. Also from MUST, Twande Sikwese with a training on mapping with ID editor, Yanjanani Miston Banda with a workshop on Fuzzy Logic in Spatial Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA), Ruth Harawa on enhancing detection of thatched houses using drone based mapping and Harineck Tholo who presented on Integrating Remote Sensing and Machine Learning for High-Resolution Vulnerability Mapping of Seasonal Wetland Shrinkage under Climate Change in Southern Malawi.

This weekend our MUST YouthMappers squad pulled up at State of the Map (SoTM) Malawi 2025 at LUANAR… and trust me, we didn’t come to play.
From understanding JOSM functionally to interactions with other mappers from across the country, our members showed up, taught, learned a lot, networked, and represented the team with real energy.

Super proud of everyone who made it, let’s keep learning, keep mapping, and keep showing up.

Hello Fam 👋
Wonderful weekend we had as we completed the World Map and trash Cleanup challenge. The event, which took place on 20th September on World Cleanup day, was held at Goliat trading center and it's surrounding areas. It was a successful event, the participants collaborated efficiently to map, sweep and collect trash in the area leaving it sparkling clean. We thank the organisers and the sponsors of the challenge, Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) ,UNICEF , Unlimited for presenting a platform with everything we needed to carryout out an activity with so much community impact. This really highlights the fact that we don't just build maps, we build mappers 🔥.

We are proud to announce that we will be taking part in the Map and clean Africa and Caribbean Challenge.
This challenge organized by Open mapping hub- Eastern and Southern Africa will give us the opportunity to map trash locations in our local community and clean the trash. This will leave our communities clean and visually appealing but also reduce the contamination which result from poor waste disposal.
Our chapter will be focussing on Goliati area which is a town in Thyolo.

What a wonderful evening we had on 3 September as we conducted an introduction to HOT and OSM for our chapter. The event focussed on introducing what HOT and OSM are, how they are related, why it is important for a Youthmapper to know these platforms and their applications in various sectors such as disaster mapping and other humanitarian activities. The event also highlighted the importance of updating and contributing to the Openstreet map since we are the very ones that need to use the data for various purposes at one point in time. Apart from learning to change the world via the id Editor in HOT tasking manager, the event also featured a fun and interactive game known as Kahoot which helped participants further enhance their understanding of HOT and OSM whilst competing for a scrumptious prize.

From understanding why joining YouthMappers matters, to learning what we do and how students benefit, the session was packed with insights, purpose, and passion. 💡📍

A special highlight was hearing from one of our alumni,, "yaaza wamkulu", Kacheyo, who shared his incredible journey, impactful projects, and how YouthMappers shaped his academic and professional path. His story truly motivated us all! 🙌✨😎
