Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve as part of the African Parks Network, entered into a public-private partnership with the Malawi government on 1st August 2015. This means that African parks will have full management and control of the park for the tenure of the agreement (20 years). Nkhotakota is in the central region of Malawi, only 10 kms to the west of Lake Malawi. It is three prominent rivers runni

ng through it with the core of these being the Bua River. The park has a large change in elevation as it stretches from the Nyika plateau coming downwards toward the lake shore. The highest mountain is Mt Chipata - which is a challenging hike to the top! However the effort provides views to the lake and back towards the plateau. African Parks will be re-introducing many animals over the next five years, however the most notable introduction will be approximately 300 - 400 new elephant. These will be relocated from Majete and Liwonde National Parks who are currently suffering from an overpopulation issue. There are two tourism establishments available with Bua River lodge providing mid-range accommodation and Tongole lodge providing a more boutique experience.

As we close womens month, let's put on the spotlight Delia Bhuno. Growing up in Chimelela village, TA Kawamba in Kasungu district, she used to admire Wildlife rangers working at Kasungu National Park. During her secondary school days, she visited Kasungu National Park a number of times, and this contributed more to her passion in conservation.

For the last twenty-two years, Delia has dedicated her life to protecting wildlife and has been working as a Parks and Wildlife Officer at Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve.

It is women like her who keep on inspiring the next generation of female Wildlife rangers.
