Butterfly Baby Baskets Malawi

Butterfly Baby Baskets Malawi A charitable project aiming to provide the poorest new mums in Nkhata Bay Malawi with a basket containing all the things needed to look after a newborn.

Butterfly Baby Baskets was initiated by Dr Genna Davis in July 2016. The concept is simple. It is much safer for a baby to sleep separately from the mother rather than in the same bed. The risk is that when the mother falls asleep she may roll onto and harm the baby. It is unfortunately a common cause of infant death. The main purpose of the baby baskets is to act as a bed for the baby. They have

a mattress in the base, a blanket and a mosquito net to fit over the top, helping to protect the baby from malaria. Within the baskets will be all sorts of things needed for a mother to look after a new baby. The baskets will be woven by a local support group of HIV positive women and men. They will be paid for their work, meaning they will have a long-term sustainable income. The group are currently in the learning stages of how to weave - this teaching is all being covered by Butterfly Baby Baskets. We hope to give every one of the poorest new mothers in Nkhata Bay District, Malawi, a baby basket. Any questions please ask and we would be very grateful for any donation! Thank you.
