This week, we had the pleasure of hosting our first Climate Fresk Workshop at Butterfly Space, directed a travelling volunteer, Rhune, who is passing through Malawi to deliver workshops to groups of all ages.

As one of the countries most affected by climate change, Malawi is already experiencing intense droughts, unpredictable rainfall patterns, and rising temperatures. The workshop allowed our team, and community groups to learn how we can mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change, and also provided an opportunity for learning, sharing, and connecting more with our team at Butterfly Space.

Rhune will conducted the same workshops with Stepping Stones International Primary School, Kunyanja Private Secondary School, and Chimbota Private Secondary School. These sessions aim to empower and sensitize the people of Nkhata Bay about how climate change directly impacts their lives and what it means for Malawi.

We love the awareness and collective action!

The hotter days are coming to an end, and the dry air is cooling down Lake Malawi. We love days like this, where the lodge and the lake are peaceful and calm and we find the time to grab a snorkel and get our hair wet! 🌊🐟

The rocky shore around Butterfly is alive with bright blue and yellow ciclids, and swimming around them is incredible. Of if you dont like getting wet...you can chose to see them beneath a stand up paddleboard instead!

Or you can dive deeper with them if you like to scuba dive, at here in

So if you’re in Malawi, this is the best season to come to Butterfly Space and visit our pretty lake creatures!

Pundu Disability Centre is a Community Based Organisation that we are proud to support. It has become an active hub for the disabled community, and the wider community to meet, learn and connect, together!

The new Education Hub is a small library and computer room, which now runs reading clubs and IT lessons alongside the longer running agroecology workshops, nursery sessions, and disability support meetings.

We are very happy to see the tailoring group is back with weekly sessions, creating space to strengthen skills and welcome new members. This is thanks to Pomerra Foundation for their new partnership with the Pundu disability group. The group will restart training with 20 trainees very soon, after some necessary maintain works. They also plan to start weaving workshops!

The Group have officially registered the centre as a Community Based Organisation, an important step that opens new opportunities for partnerships and support.

And, the centre have welcomed our new volunteer Marlise, a trained psychotherapist joining us for the next three months. She’ll be working on setting up the sensory room and helping us develop therapeutic support at the centre, on a linger term basis.

Thank you to everyone who helps make Pundu what it is.

Hi everyone! We are relaunching our anti rabies campaign to protect children, adults and animals from rabies in Nkhata Bay.

Many dog owners dont have the means to vaccinate, neuter or spay their pets. This fundraiser covers the cost of this necessary treatment to prevent the spread of rabies, and unnecessary suffering to animals.

The amazing team of government vets donate their time and work tirelessly to treat as many animals as possible using financial donations to cover the costs of medical equipment and vaccinations.

Your donation goes a long way. Thanks for your support!

The Butterfly Team!

Hello, we are Marliese and Emily and are working as volunteers… Emily Lebede needs your support for Rabies vaccinations, spay & neutering stray dogs in Malawi

The rainy season is over and the water is calm again.

Travellers, volunteers, and interns have been spending time together on the lake, with boat rides with Monkey Business, trips to Vwasa Marsh, fresh coconuts, and some lovely skies.

These moments mean a lot to us. They help support our community and fund our education and sustainable projects.

If you would like to book a stay or get involved, you can find more on our website.

Its been a while since we updated you on Stepping Stones School. As always, we have had a very busy term, and a lot of fun activities happening! Here are some updates-

We have been enjoying healthy, nutrition-based cooking classes, to encourage kids to eat a healthy balanced diet.

At our community hub, our librarian and IT team, Blessings and Ramos, have been very busy organising books and laptop lessons for the community and students at the school. It is absolutely thriving and the library is being visited by students and adults from many surrounding villages and schools!

We have also hosted female sanitation lessons and sanitary towel distribution through the 'Kids Crusade Foundation' and 'Supreme Sanitary Pads Malawi'. These sessions are helping break stigma, improve school attendance and empower girls with knowledge about their health.

And we have even had the road traffic police visit us for road safety lessons to teach the kids about the importance of road safety!

Thanks to all supporters, sponsors, volunteers and interns for making this happen! A special shout out to Matilde, our intern, who has supported the school management team, Imogen and Hastings, to run these activities and make them a success!

And a shout out to Patrycja who organised creative photo skills workshops at the schools. The kids loved it and learned a lot.

Here are just some, but remember to see the social media page for regular updates, and sign up for our newsletter!

Today we honour the courage and sacrifice of those who gave their lives for Malawi’s freedom.

On Martyrs Day, we remember the brave men and women who stood for justice, dignity and independence, shaping the nation we are proud to call home.

At Butterfly Space Eco Lodge, we pause in respect and gratitude.

A Nkhata Bay-based local organization known as Chimbotaa Community Development in partnership with Butterfly Space, has trained about 2,000 people in Sub Traditional Authority Mndola's area in liquid microbial fertilizer production in the district.

Speaking to Zodiak Online today after the training, Chimbota Community Development organisation's co-director Kelvin Troughton, said the microbial fertilizer is highly recommended for soil conservation as it is made from local materials that are not hazardous to soil.

Village Headman Kasyata commended the organisatiion for training people in the area, expressing hope that they will make good use of the skills they have acquired.

After three wonderful months, we’re saying goodbye to our volunteer, Kaspars.

Thank you for your incredible energy, positive spirit, and the wealth of knowledge you shared about permaculture, healthy living, and making the most of the resources that come from our most precious source — nature.

During this time, Kaspars worked closely with MSPC and focused on developing school kitchen gardens with primary schools in Nkhata Bay, including Stepping Stones, Chakoma Primary School, and Vwalamani. Through this work, he supported schools and the local community, educating, inspiring, and planting the seeds of passion for agriculture🤍

It has been a truly inspiring journey for all of us. Thank you for everything, and we can’t wait to welcome you back again someday! 🌱
