Mpatamanga Private Wildlife Ranch

Mpatamanga Private Wildlife Ranch Mpatamanga Wildlife Ranch is a protected indigenous woodland along the Shire River in Neno District, Malawi. The ranch is privately owned.

After years of pressure it supports over half a million regenerating trees proving that steady stewardship and protection allow nature to recover. Mpatamanga Wildlife Ranch was established by Ian Bartlett in 2005 and offers the basics for campers and outdoor lovers. The camp site is situated right above the gorge on the Shire river with breathtaking scenery all around. It is located approx 40kms f

rom Chileka Airport (old Mwanza road) in Neno district. The access road to the camp (approx 3.5kms after the bridge) is only accessible by 4WD but there is a foot path from the bridge to the camp (less than 1km). Mpatamanga Wildlife Ranch offers Malawi's most natural and beautiful scenic views along with nature trails, 4X4 track, fishing, clay shooting and an outdoor shooting range. Members have access to one chalet, camp site with outdoor toilet and shower and other basic amenities.

MALAWI’S CONSERVATION CHAMPION
For more than 20 years, while much of Malawi’s indigenous woodland disappeared to charcoal burning, illegal logging and land pressure, one privately managed wildlife ranch along the Shire River quietly became a conservation success story.
At Mpatamanga Wildlife Ranch in Neno District, independent forestry experts from the Forestry Research Institute of Malawi (FRIM) recorded 519,180 indigenous trees across 238 hectares, representing one of the most remarkable examples of long-term private woodland conservation in Malawi.
The assessment found that the woodland contains 68 indigenous tree species, including threatened and protected species such as African Blackwood (Dalbergia melanoxylon), Pterocarpus angolensis, Pericopsis angolensis, Burkea africana and Terminalia sericea.
Most significantly, FRIM concluded that the forest is recovering from historic disturbances due to 20 years of improved management and protection, with more than 480,000 regenerating trees in the younger growth classes.
Unlike many conservation projects funded by governments, NGOs or international donors, Mpatamanga Wildlife Ranch was protected through the dedication of a single individual committed to preserving Malawi’s natural heritage for future generations.

The ranch now stands as a living example of what long-term conservation can achieve:
🌳 519,180 indigenous trees protected
🌳 68 native tree species recorded
🌳 Threatened species safeguarded
🌳 Wildlife habitat preserved
🌳 Carbon stored and ecosystem services maintained
🌳 More than two decades of continuous stewardship

As the founder of Mpatamanga Wildlife Ranch and author of Memoirs of a Real Crocodile Hunter, I am proud that my journey evolved from protecting communities from dangerous crocodiles to protecting one of Malawi’s recovering indigenous woodlands.
Whether history ultimately judges me as Malawi’s greatest solo conservationist is for others to decide. What cannot be disputed is that the independent FRIM survey confirmed the conservation of over half a million indigenous trees through more than twenty years of sustained management and protection.

🌍 FEATURED IN THE DAILY TIMES – WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 2026 🌍
From Crocodile Hunter to Conservationist: The Story of Mpatamanga Wildlife Ranch
Today I am honoured to be featured in The Daily Times on World Environment Day, highlighting a conservation journey that has spanned more than 20 years.
What began as a personal commitment to protect a threatened piece of indigenous woodland along the Shire River has grown into one of Malawi’s most remarkable private conservation success stories. Independent research by the Forestry Research Institute of Malawi (FRIM) found that Mpatamanga Wildlife Ranch covers approximately 238 hectares and contains an estimated 519,180 indigenous trees, including several protected and threatened species.
This achievement was not funded by government, NGOs, or international donors. It was built through persistence, long-term protection, anti-poaching patrols, fire management, and a belief that Malawi’s natural heritage is worth preserving for future generations.
Many people know me as The Real Crocodile Hunter®, but conservation has become my greatest legacy. The recovery of more than half a million indigenous trees demonstrates what can happen when wilderness is given a chance to regenerate and thrive.
As forests across Africa continue to face pressure from deforestation, charcoal production, and habitat loss, Mpatamanga stands as proof that long-term stewardship can make a real difference.
Thank you to The Daily Times for recognising this story on World Environment Day.

🌍 WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 2026
Today, I want to celebrate something that is often overlooked: the power of one person to make a difference.
More than twenty years ago, I made a decision to protect a piece of wilderness at Mpatamanga in Malawi. There were no grants, no NGO funding, and no government support—just a belief that Africa’s natural heritage was worth saving.
Twenty years later, that commitment has helped protect over 519,000 indigenous trees, including rare and protected species, while preserving an important woodland ecosystem along the Shire River. The result is proof that long-term conservation works.
As forests continue to disappear across many parts of Malawi and Africa, conservation has never been more important. Trees protect wildlife, store carbon, prevent soil erosion, safeguard water resources, and provide hope for future generations.
This World Environment Day, I encourage everyone to plant a tree, protect a tree, or support those who are working to conserve the natural world. Small actions, repeated over time, create extraordinary results.
Nature cannot speak for itself. It needs people willing to stand up and defend it.

Happy World Environment Day 2026.

For more than 20 years, I have dedicated myself to protecting a piece of Africa’s natural heritage.
Today, an independent survey by the Forestry Research Institute of Malawi (FRIM) has verified that Mpatamanga Woodland contains 519,180 indigenous trees across 238 hectares of protected woodland. I didn’t plant a forest. I protected one. What began as a personal commitment to conservation has become a lasting legacy for future generations. In a world where forests continue to disappear, this woodland has survived and flourished. This is proof that one person can make a difference.

Not all environmental champions wear suits, attend conferences, or make speeches.
Some spend decades on the ground protecting wilderness when nobody is watching.
519,180 verified indigenous trees.
Over 20 years of self-funded conservation.
One man. One vision. One extraordinary legacy for Malawi.
What was once threatened by deforestation and habitat destruction is today a protected ecosystem supporting wildlife, biodiversity, and future generations.
I did not inherit a wildlife sanctuary.
I built one.
Mpatamanga Wildlife Ranch stands today as proof that one determined individual can make a real difference for conservation in Africa.
This is more than land.
This is a living environmental legacy.

These pictures from Malawi24 are a reminder of the battle Malawi still faces against illegal deforestation.
While others destroy forests for short-term gain, some of us have spent decades trying to protect what remains. For over 20 years I have fought to preserve Mpatamanga Wildlife Ranch along the Shire River in Malawi — restoring indigenous woodland, protecting wildlife habitat, and proving that conservation can be achieved through long-term commitment and sacrifice.
Today, illegal deforestation continues to destroy some of Africa’s most beautiful landscapes. Once ancient woodland is gone, it can take generations to recover.

Conservation is not just about wildlife. It is about protecting rivers, climate, communities, and the future itself.

Some rivers shape your life long before you understand where they are taking you.
Years ago, I stood beside the rivers of Africa tracking man-eating crocodiles through darkness, danger, and uncertainty. Today I stand beside the River Thames in London — a very different world, yet somehow the water still feels familiar. Life can carry a man from the wild banks of the Shire River to the heart of one of the world’s greatest cities. Different continents. Different chapters. Same spirit of adventure.
Sometimes the greatest journey is not across countries… but through life itself.

Most people only talk about conservation.
Very few spend over twenty years actually protecting one piece of land and watching a forest come back to life. Mpatamanga is proof that damaged woodland can recover when somebody refuses to give up on it. Proud to have played a part in protecting this corner of Malawi for future generations.🐊
