Apause Organisation Participates in EIS Awareness Workshop in Blantyre.
_Blantyre, Malawi_ — Apause Organisation took part in a stakeholder engagement workshop organised by the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) in collaboration with the Human Rights Consultative Committee (HRCC). The workshop was held at Malawi Sun Hotel in Blantyre.
Speaking during the engagement, Executive Director Peter Mumba expressed appreciation to HRCC, the Presidential Advisor on NGOs in Malawi, and MRA for organising the important workshop.
“It is good that we are learning. However, many Malawians still do not understand these taxes, and more awareness and engagement is needed with all stakeholders,” said Mumba.
*Strengthening Awareness on Tax Reforms*
The workshop focused on the newly introduced Electronic Invoicing System (EIS), which replaces the long-standing Electronic Fiscal Devices (EFDs). The system aims to enhance transparency, efficiency, and compliance in tax administration.
MRA has intensified awareness efforts following resistance from some sectors of the business community, emphasising the need for inclusive engagement with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs).
*Strategic Engagement and Dialogue*
Commissioner of Domestic Taxes, Grey Balawe, highlighted the importance of continuous dialogue:
“This engagement ensures that civil society understands the new system and can accurately communicate its benefits. We will also continue engaging traders to improve understanding and acceptance.”
*Promoting Transparency and Accountability*
HRCC Board Chairperson, Robert Mkwezalamba, welcomed the initiative while stressing the importance of evidence-based analysis:
“We aim to understand the objectives of this taxation system and its impact on Malawians so that we can effectively play our oversight and advocacy role.”
He emphasised three key priorities for CSOs:
1. Understanding the objectives of the EIS
2. Assessing its impact on citizens and businesses
3. Ensuring transparency and accountability in implementation. Luther Mambala
