Tiyeni's mission is to end food poverty and to improve water security through our innovative climate-smart agriculture method, Deep Bed Farming.

With little more than pickaxes and some training, thousands of farmers have dramatically increased their crop yields from one harvest to the next - with long-lasting results. Tiyeni is a small UK charity organization, operating in all 3 regions of Malawi. The Tiyeni office is situated in Mzuzu, northern Malawi.

🍉 Happy National Watermelon Day! 🍉

Today we celebrate one of the most refreshing and profitable fruits farmers can grow: watermelon! But beyond the sweetness lies a powerful opportunity for smallholder farmers.

Through Deep Bed Farming (DBF), farmers are transforming how they grow crops like watermelon. By improving soil structure, increasing water retention, and enhancing fertility through composting, DBF creates the perfect conditions for high-quality, high-yield watermelon production. 🌱

💡 Why does this matter?
The demand for watermelon continues to grow in local and regional markets. It is a fast-selling, high-value crop that can significantly boost household income when produced consistently and of good quality.

With DBF, farmers are not just growing food — they are building profitable farming businesses. The improved yields and resilience offered by DBF mean farmers can reliably produce watermelons for market, take advantage of peak demand, and increase their earnings.

🌧️ World Rain Day — 29 July

At Tiyeni, we don't just watch the rain fall, we make sure it stays where it's needed most.

Every year on this day, we're reminded that water is the foundation of food security. That's why water harvesting sits at the heart of our Deep Bed Farming (DBF) approach: contour ridges and raised beds that slow rainwater down, hold it in the soil, and stop it from washing away nutrients and topsoil.

For smallholder farmers across Malawi, this simple shift means:

🌱 Wisdom Wednesday

With Deep Bed Farming (DBF), tillage is not forever—it’s a one-time investment.

In the first year, farmers break the hardpan and establish permanent beds. After that, for up to five years, there is no need for repeated tillage—only simple bed maintenance.

What does this mean for farmers?

✔️ Lower labour costs – no repeated land preparation each season
✔️ Time saved – more time for other productive activities
✔️ Improved soil structure – minimal disturbance allows soil life to thrive
✔️ Better moisture retention – undisturbed soils hold water longer

🌱 Motivation Monday | Harvesting the Power of Healthy Soils 🌽

A bumper harvest starts from the ground up. With Deep Bed Farming (DBF), improved water retention and enriched soil fertility ensure that maize grains are filled—free from moisture stress during critical stages like tasseling and grain filling.

Captured in Zondani Tembo Village (Lupaso Section) during a participatory yield evaluation on Martha Ngwira’s DBF field, this harvest is a true reflection of what happens when soils are nourished and farming works with nature.

Field Story Friday 🌱

Feeding the soil is the first step to feeding our communities. In line with the Deep Bed Farming (DBF) principle of “Feeding the Soils,” farmers are embracing composting practices to restore and enrich their land.

In this moment, farmers from Malemia Village, Mankhamba Section (Chiwamba EPA) are preparing Bokashi manure—turning organic materials into nutrient-rich compost that improves soil organic matter.

Healthy soil is the engine of life beneath our feet. It drives biological activity, enhances nutrient availability, and increases water-holding capacity—ensuring crops can thrive even in challenging conditions.

By investing in the soil today, these farmers are building resilience, improving yields, and securing food for tomorrow. 🌾

Deep Bed Farming (DBF), a climate-smart agriculture technique developed by Tiyeni, is more than just a method; it’s a package.

It brings together standalone technologies that are often difficult to adopt on their own, but are cleverly crafted into one highly adoptable system for farmers.

DBF works both above and below the soil. Farmers construct raised planting beds along contour ridges, while trapping runoff using box ridges and swales. Beneath the surface, the system breaks the hard pan, allowing water to infiltrate, reducing soil erosion, improving aeration, and increasing water retention.

The result? A flat, fertile surface that supports diverse intercrops with stronger root systems—far beyond what conventional ridging allows.
It doesn’t stop there. DBF shifts the focus from feeding crops to feeding the soil through compost manure and reducing dependence on inorganic fertilisers.

That’s the power of DBF: one package, transforming soil, water, and livelihoods.

Did you know? Nearly 80% of the food consumed in Malawi is produced by smallholder farmers—70% of whom are women. Yet, many of these women face limited access to resources, training, and opportunities.

That’s where we come in.
