Tiyeni's mission is to end food poverty and to improve water security through our innovative climate-smart agriculture method, Deep Bed Farming.

With little more than pickaxes and some training, thousands of farmers have dramatically increased their crop yields from one harvest to the next - with long-lasting results. Tiyeni is a small UK charity organization, operating in all 3 regions of Malawi. The Tiyeni office is situated in Mzuzu, northern Malawi.

🌱 Building Knowledge, Empowering Extension Workers

Tiyeni conducted Deep Bed Farming (DBF) training with the DAO, AEDCs and AEDOs in Mulanje, recognising the important role extension workers play in bringing agricultural knowledge and practical solutions closer to farmers.

By equipping extension workers with the knowledge and skills to understand and promote DBF, Tiyeni strengthens the capacity of those who work directly with farming communities.

Tiyeni farmers in Wayinga, Lupaso Section, are learning how to make and use Mbeya and Bokasi manure as part of their Deep Bed Farming (DBF) practices.

Organic manure plays an important role in the DBF system by helping to improve soil fertility, support healthy crop growth, and build healthier soils.

The beauty is that farmers can make manure using locally available resources, reducing their reliance on costly external inputs.

Farmers in Lupaso are preparing their fields using Deep Bed Farming — establishing raised, permanent beds that can be maintained and used season after season.

Unlike conventional farming, where farmers may need to reshape and till their fields repeatedly, DBF encourages farmers to establish the beds once and maintain them over time.

This week, Tiyeni was in Kafulufulu, working alongside farmers through a combination of classroom lessons and hands-on demonstrations.

Our approach goes beyond teaching farmers what to do. We help them understand why it matters and give them practical skills they can apply in their own fields and communities.

Farmers learned about natural resource management and the importance of restoring and protecting the land. By caring for the soil, water, trees, and other natural resources, communities can help restore the balance of the environment and build a more sustainable future.

At Tiyeni, we believe that practical learning creates lasting change. During a recent Village Natural Resources Management Committee (VNRMC) training, community members moved beyond theory and gained hands-on experience in tree planting, nursery management, and sustainable natural resource management.

🌱 Through practical demonstrations and activities, VNRMC members developed skills they can take back to their communities and put into action.
