MUUMOZA YOUTH ORGANISATION JOINS THE CIVICUS GLOBAL ALLIANCE

Muumoza Youth Organisation (MUYO) is proud to announce its official membership in the CIVICUS Alliance, a global network of civil society organisations dedicated to defending civic space, advancing democratic freedoms, and strengthening citizen participation worldwide.

This milestone marks an important step in MUYO’s journey as a youth-led organisation working at the grassroots level in rural Malawi to expand civic participation, amplify marginalized voices, and strengthen accountability in governance systems.

As a member of CIVICUS, MUYO joins a global community of actors committed to protecting and expanding civic space, particularly in contexts where participation is limited or unequal. This recognition strengthens our resolve to continue empowering rural youth, women, and communities in Mzimba District to actively engage in democratic processes and local development.

This is not just recognition—it is a renewed responsibility to contribute to global efforts for open, inclusive, and participatory societies.

MUUMOZA YOUTH ORGANIZATION DEMANDS TRANSPARENCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY OVER UNREGULATED MINING AT KAMLINDENI HILLS

Mzimba District, Malawi – Muumoza Youth Organization (MUYO) has raised serious concerns over ongoing mining activities at Kamlindeni Hills, which have caused extensive land degradation, including open pits, loss of vegetation, and waste accumulation.

MUYO notes with concern that the mining company responsible is not known to the surrounding communities and has not undertaken any visible corporate social responsibility or disclosed potential benefits to local people. There has been no evidence of meaningful community consultation, environmental safeguards, or site rehabilitation.

“The continued destruction of Kamlindeni Hills without transparency or community benefit reflects a failure of responsible mining and land governance,” said Bathromew Shaba, Executive Director of Muumoza Youth Organization.

MUYO calls upon relevant government authorities and regulatory institutions to urgently:
1. Investigate and disclose the identity and legal status of the mining operator

2. Enforce environmental, social, and land governance regulations

3. Ensure community consultation and benefit-sharing mechanisms

4. Compel immediate rehabilitation of degraded sites

MUYO further calls on development partners and civil society to support community-led land restoration and environmental protection initiatives in the area.

Kamlindeni Hills, Mzimba District

These images were taken at Kamlindeni Hills, where unregulated mining is leaving behind deep open pits, destroyed vegetation, and waste deposits. What was once a thriving natural landscape is now severely degraded.

These scars on the land threaten biodiversity, water sources, and community livelihoods. As vegetation disappears, the land becomes vulnerable to erosion, flooding, and climate shocks—placing rural families at greater risk.

We cannot remain silent as our hills are destroyed.

🔊 Muumoza Youth Organization calls for urgent action:
- Strong enforcement of environmental and mining regulations
- Protection of community land and natural resources
- Investment in land restoration and sustainable livelihoods

🌱 Protect the land. Restore the hills. Secure our future.

MUUMOZA YOUTH ORGANIZATION STATEMENT ON MALAWI’S 2025 GENERAL ELECTIONS

As Malawi prepares to go to the polls on Tuesday, 16th September 2025, Muumoza Youth Organization (MUYO) would like to urge all young people and every registered voter to go out in large numbers and peacefully exercise their constitutional right to choose leaders of their choice.

We further appeal to all candidates contesting for various positions whether for the Presidency, Member of Parliament, or Ward Councillor to demonstrate responsibility and maturity by respecting the will of the people and peacefully accepting the outcome of the elections.

MUYO wishes the very best to all leaders who will be entrusted with the mandate to serve. We also take this opportunity to remind them of their duty to honor and fulfill the promises they made to the people during the campaign period since the citizens will vote for them because of their promises.

Together, let us uphold peace, unity, and democracy for the prosperity of our nation.

PRESS RELEASE

MUUMOZA YOUTH ORGANIZATION CALLS FOR PEACEFUL, FACTUAL, AND INCLUSIVE CAMPAIGNS AHEAD OF THE 2025 TRIPARTITE ELECTIONS

As the Malawi Electoral Commission launches the official campaign period for the 2025 Tripartite Elections on 14th July 2025, Muumoza Youth Organization (MUYO) would like to take this opportunity to call on all political parties, electoral stakeholders, and the general public to uphold the principles of peace, democracy, and national unity during this critical period in our democratic journey.

We urge all political parties and their candidates to conduct fact-based, issue-driven campaigns that focus on policies and developmental agendas rather than hate speech, personal attacks, or divisive rhetoric. The future of Malawi depends on a mature and respectful democratic process that reflects the aspirations of its people, particularly the youth and marginalized communities.

We also send a strong and heartfelt message to the youth of Malawi: Do not allow yourselves to be manipulated by political leaders to engage in acts of violence, intimidation, or misconduct. Instead, we encourage you to actively and responsibly participate in the electoral process by engaging in civic education, registering to vote, attending issue-based debates, and holding leaders accountable through peaceful means. Your voice, your vote, and your vision matter — let us be agents of peace, not pawns of conflict.

Furthermore, we call upon the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to maintain its independence, transparency, and impartiality throughout the electoral process. The credibility of the 2025 Tripartite Elections lies in MEC’s ability to act as a neutral referee, uphold the Constitution, and ensure that every citizen’s vote counts equally and fairly.

As Muumoza Youth Organization, we remain committed to promoting inclusive democratic participation, peacebuilding, and youth empowerment. We will continue to engage communities through civic education and dialogue platforms to support credible, peaceful, and participatory elections.

Together, let us build a better Malawi where democracy thrives, peace prevails, and every voice is heard.

Muumoza Youth Organisation at the Global Land Forum 2025 in Colombia!

We are excited to represent Malawi at the Global Land Forum, hosted by the International Land Coalition (ILC) in Bogotá, Colombia. The Forum began with the Global Land Youth Forum, where young leaders gathered to shape the future of land justice and governance.

Now, the main Global Land Forum brings together grassroots organisations, Indigenous peoples, policy makers, and land rights defenders from around the world to push for people-centered land governance.

From Mzimba to Colombia, Muumoza Youth Organisation is proud to raise the voices of rural youth, women, and communities whose lives depend on land.

Land is not just a resource — it is life, culture, and identity.
