Today, 17 December 2025, the Young Urban Women Network, with support from Girls Activist Youth Organisation and ActionAid Malawi successfully mobilised traditional leaders, civil society organisations, Women from the Web for Life movement, and members of the Young Urban Women Network for an awareness walk against gender-based violence.

The 4km awareness walk took place from Madzimayera to Campus Lodge, demonstrating collective commitment to raising awareness on issues affecting young women and ending gender-based violence in our communities.

In the afternoon, we held a panel discussion with representatives from civil society, men, women, Web for Life members, and Young Urban Women members. The discussion focused on how gender-based violence is understood in different community contexts and the actions stakeholders are taking, within their capacities, to prevent and respond to GBV.

Together, we continue to raise our voices, engage our communities, and take action for the safety, dignity, and rights of young women.

Tonight, Mchinji Young Urban Women Network held an online check-in meeting via Zoom bringing together our members to continue the conversations from last month’s refresher training and orientation. During this session, we:
• Reflected on key learnings from the feminist leadership refresher
• Built further capacity on economic policies and processes in Malawi building on the election environment that we are in and identified our opportunities for advocacy after this period
• Strengthened our sense of solidarity and collective power by coming up with ways to engage and mobilize more young women
With these discussions, YUWNet continues to position young women at the forefront of economic and social justice advocacy in Malawi.

Young Urban Women Network under the Valuing Women’s Work project by ActionAid Malawi with support from William and Flora Hewlett Foundation held a vibrant session bringing together our members .It was a refresher training for those who have been part of the network before, and an orientation session for our new members joining the movement .
Together, we explored the goal, objectives, achievements, and way forward of the network placing a strong focus on economic justice and how young women can collectively advocate for recognition of unpaid care work, decent work, equal opportunities, and gender equality.

It was a day filled with joy and new knowledge ☺️

Young women leading change through research!

Our hub leaders from MchinjiHalina Nellie Pulumuka, Kapiriand NsanjePrecious Kadwala Young Urban Women Networks recently conducted Feminist Participatory Action Research (FPAR) in Kapiri and Nsanje to explore the intersections of economic and climate justice.

Key findings:
- Climate change deepens economic vulnerability, pushing young women further into poverty.
- Barriers limit young women’s access to resources and information, making them more at risk.
-Despite these challenges, young urban women show incredible resilience and strength by building community networks.

Through the FPAR process, young women not only co-created knowledge but also built power and raised their consciousness—informing advocacy and community-driven solutions.

By centering their voices, we can co-create just and sustainable solutions that truly work for young women and their communities.

Happy International Women’s Day!

Women are breaking barriers, leading change, and shaping the future. But true equality means valuing care work both paid and unpaid. It’s time to recognize, redistribute, and support care work so women can thrive in all spaces.

Let’s build a world where women’s work at home and beyond is truly valued!

On January 10, 2025, the Mchinji Feminomics Hub held an important policy engagement meeting with traditional Chiefs around Mchinji Boma. The meeting introduced the Hub’s work and highlighted the Chiefs’ critical role as duty bearers in fostering community development and holding local councils accountable, especially when public services are underfunded,a burden for women.

The Chiefs and the Hub committed to working together as watchdogs to promote transparency, equity, and accountability in addressing social injustices. This alliance marks a significant step toward empowering women and building a more inclusive and equitable Mchinji.
