The 6th edition of SARSYC registration is now underway, and we are encouraged by the strong response and enthusiastic entries received so far. As Namibia prepares to host this landmark conference, we look forward to a powerful platform where young people, professionals, and advocates will come together to engage, learn, share insights, and champion best practices in health, education, and the broader public health discourse.

Across Africa, young people continue to face many of the same pressing challenges. That is why coming together through platforms such as SARSYC is not only important, it is necessary. When youth unite, they amplify their voices, shape solutions, and influence policies that affect their lives and futures. This conference offers a critical opportunity to collectively strategize and clearly communicate to governments and decision-makers what young people want, what they need, and how they believe these ideas should be implemented.

Now more than ever, youth participation must move beyond being symbolic to being intentional, meaningful, and action-oriented. SARSYC is a space for young leaders to contribute to conversations that matter, drive advocacy, and help build systems that are responsive, inclusive, and sustainable.

Be part of this process. Register, raise your voice, and help shape the future of health and education for young people across Africa.

The Mchinji State Resident Magistrate Court has sentenced Pastor Charles Chimombo to 14 years imprisonment with hard labour for ra**ng a 3 days to delivery- pregnant woman aged 19 who came for prayers at his house as she developed 'Katambala' in her private parts, on 3rd April, 2026 at Kapiri TC in Mchinji.

In mitigation the pastor said he has nothing to say but instead requested the court to allow him to read a verse in the bible. The Court sustained the request and he read John 8 Vs 1 where the story of a woman caught in adultery is recorded.

In his submission State prosecutor Misheck Kalawa, mentioned severity of the crime, Trauma to the victim and failure of the convict to learn from his mistakes as the aggravating factors to be considered for a stiffer punishment to deter would be offenders.

Delivering his sentence, State Resident Magistrate, His Worship Godfrey Nyirenda, concurred with State and angrily slapped the man of God, to 14 years imprisonment with hard labour.

In a related development, the same Court has today, sentenced Ishmael Vunga, 25, a seasoned herbalist, to 12 years imprisonment with hard labour for having sexual in*******se with a 15 year minor at Mtulira Village TA Kapondo in Mchinji.

Commenting on the due sentences, GAYO Executive Director, Richard Batch expressed both satisfaction and optimism saying handling of these cases in this manner has been the calling of the organization inorder to make sure girls and women are protected from sexual abuse especially from Men of God and other leaders in the society, who are supposed to be their caretakers by default.

Girls Activist Youth Organization (GAYO) has been closely following and funding all the court proceedings right from the onset of these two cases.

Today, the Girls Activist Youth Organisation (GAYO) joined the rest of the continent in celebrating the Day of the African Child, reflecting on our shared commitment to creating a safe, healthy, and thriving environment for every child.
This year's commemoration was held under the crucial continental theme:
"Ensuring Universal Access to Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) for Every Child in Malawi"

We took this important message directly to the grassroots, co-organizing and participating in a colorful and impactful event at the Matete Ground in the area of Senior Chief Fukamapiri in Nkhata Bay District.
We were deeply honored to host the Minister of Gender, Children, Disability, and Social Welfare, Honourable Mary Thom Navicha, MP, as our Guest of Honour. In her address, she emphasized the government's commitment to improving child welfare and ensuring that clean water and proper sanitation facilities are accessible to all children—especially girls in rural communities, for whom access to WASH is essential to remaining in school, managing hygiene with dignity, and achieving their dreams.

As GAYO, we stand firm in our mission to advocate for the rights of children and young people. Access to clean water and a clean environment is not a luxury; it is a fundamental human right. When we guarantee safe water and proper hygiene in our communities and schools, we protect our children from waterborne health threats, improve educational outcomes, and give them the foundation they need to thrive.

A huge thank you to our co-organizers, traditional leaders, partners, and the wonderful community of Nkhata Bay for turning out in large numbers to champion this cause with us! Together, we can build an Africa that is truly fit for its children.
