Billy's Malawi Project

Billy's Malawi Project The Billy Riordan Memorial Trust works to improve the overall health status of the village of Cape Maclear (Chembe Village).

The original Billy Riordan Memorial Clinic was opened in 2004 to provide primary care medical services to the people of Chembe and Cape MacClear in Malawi in Central Africa. At that time no clinic existed to serve the medical needs of this community of approximately 15,000 people and people died daily from largely preventable and treatable diseases. The nearest district hospital was a one and a ha

lf hour difficult journey away and was out of reach for most villagers. In 2007 a small in-patient unit was added and the clinic now provides 24 hour medical care on an in-patient and out-patient basis to the largely subsistence farming population. During the dry season an average of 80 patients attend the clinic every day but this can rise to 120 during the wet season. The conditions most frequently seen are HIV/Aids and Malaria and associated diseases such as asthma, dysentery and malnutrition. The Clinic is staffed mainly on a volunteer basis and is constantly seeking new volunteers. All our funding comes from donations of which 91% goes directly to the running costs of the clinic.

One of Ireland’s most powerful and authentic musical voices, Dempsey is renowned for his stirring live performances and deeply personal songs, shaped by themes of Irish life, history and resilience. His appearance in the intimate setting of St. Mary’s Church offers a rare opportunity to experience his music up close.

He will be joined on the night by Lumiere, the acclaimed duo of Eilís Kennedy and Pauline Scanlon, whose sound is rooted in the rich singing tradition of West Kerry. Placing song and storytelling at the heart of their music, they have brought their distinctive, intimate style from local sessions to international stages, joined by renowned guitarist Gerry O'Beirne.

Also supporting on the night is Cúl Dubh, a local traditional band featuring John O’Brien, John Kelly, Avril Bowler and Laurence Courtney.

All proceeds from the concert will go to Billy’s Malawi Project, a remarkable charity founded by Di**le woman Mags O’Riordan. Established in the early 2000s in memory of her son Billy, the project delivers essential healthcare, education programmes and nutritional support, improving and saving lives in Malawi.
