Barely a week after Chisomo Group, an organization comprising people with disabilities in GVH Kalonga, Mangochi, was oriented and capacitated in soya production, the group has officially begun producing and marketing its own brand, Thanzi Porridge Flour. The team is currently selling the porridge flour at MK4,000 per 1kg.

As reported earlier, SEEED Malawi through the District Council equipped the group with knowledge and skills in product promotion, marketing, and sales to support the visibility and sustainability of the initiative, skills that are already being put to good use.

The picture attached shows one of the beneficiaries, Sylvia Jawadu, who serves as the group’s Deputy Secretary, posing for a photograph while showcasing a 1kg packet of Thanzi Porridge Flour.

We are reflecting on yesterday’s successful activity by SEEED Malawi, whose main highlight was the official handover of bags of maize, groundnuts, and soya beans to Chisomo CBO, a community-based organization comprising persons with disabilities. The colorful ceremony was held at Group Village Head Kalonga in Mangochi.

The photo attached captures Group Village Head Kalonga proudly standing at the center, symbolizing community leadership and support for the initiative. On one side, SEEED Malawi Director, Mr. Aggrey Mfune, is seen touching the bag in a ceremonial gesture of handing over the starter pack to the group, while Mrs Eneless James, Chairperson of the Chisomo Community-Based Group, is also touching the bag as a sign of officially receiving the support on behalf of the organization. Standing beside them is Mr. Banda, dressed in a white golf shirt, witnessing the handover ceremony.

The handover took place during a practical training session aimed at empowering persons with disabilities through the promotion of the Thanzi Porridge Flour initiative, enabling the CBO to venture into a sustainable business programme. The event marked an important milestone in promoting sustainable livelihoods, improved nutrition, and economic empowerment within the community.

Speaking during the event, Mrs Eneless James commended SEEED Malawi for the gesture and pledged that her team would ensure the smooth running and sustainability of the enterprise.

In his remarks, Group Village Head Kalonga expressed appreciation and excitement over the initiative, praising the organization for providing not only training but also practical support through the starter pack. He noted that many organizations conduct trainings without practical demonstrations or capital, making the provision of maize, soya beans, rice, groundnuts and other relevant production resources that contribute toward the success of the initiative. He further emphasized that having personally tasted the quality of the Thanzi Porridge Flour gave him confidence in the project and pledged his continued support to the group as the head of the village.

Mr. Aggrey Mfune and Mr. Banda reiterated the organization’s commitment to supporting vulnerable groups within communities. They further emphasized that their donor partner, Samburu Trust , a women-led organization based in Kenya, remains committed to supporting empowerment initiatives and resource-sharing for groups such as the Chisomo Community-Based Group.

The participants were empowered with practical knowledge and hands-on experience in the production of soya products as a sustainable business venture called Thanzi Porridge Flour.

Day 3 of the 4-day capacity-building training on business management continued successfully today, with participants gaining more practical knowledge and skills aimed at strengthening their soon-to-be business ventures.

The session was facilitated by Mrs. M’bobo from the Nutrition Office at the District Council, who engaged participants in interactive discussions centered on three key areas: entrepreneurship, personal development, and business sustainability.

She began by encouraging participants to share the types of businesses they had previously been involved in, creating an opportunity for experience sharing and peer learning.

Mrs. M’bobo also emphasized the importance of personal hygiene and body cleanliness, stressing that cleanliness is not only essential for good health, but also plays a significant role in building trust, professionalism, and confidence when promoting and operating a business.

Participants were reminded that maintaining proper hygiene helps create a positive image for both individuals and their products, especially when dealing with food production and customer relations.

As part of the day’s activities, participants were later divided into groups that are expected to receive resources tomorrow to support their first soya production initiative, marking an important step toward the practical implementation of the skills and knowledge acquired during the training.

During Day 2 of the 4-day capacity-building training on business management for soya production, conducted by SEEED Malawi, the session was highlighted by facilitations from officials of the Ministry of Agriculture.

The session focused on group management, with particular emphasis on the roles and responsibilities of the executive committee. Participants were also taken through the importance of proper record keeping, with facilitators stressing that maintaining accurate records is essential for efficiency, accountability, and building trust with current and potential partners as the group ventures into business activities.

It is worth noting that the group already has an established structure, a bank account, and a constitution in place, which has made the facilitation process smoother and more effective.

The training is being facilitated by Patricia Chimwaza, Christopher Nkhoma, and Charles Makalamba from the District Council’s Agriculture Dpartment. The session was attended by over 15 women and 5 men, making it gender-sensitive and inclusive.
Patricia further advised the group to be innovative in soya production, emphasizing the need to ensure high-quality products, standardization, and strict adherence to cleanliness and community guidelines.

As Kulima Kwambone kicks off its third and final project cycle, it's gearing up for a new phase.

The project recently got youths involved in Monitoring & Evaluation through one-on-one interviews on project progress.

This exercise shows how crucial it is for project collaboration with youths, especially young women as management team.

The progress report highlights communities' shift to embracing indigenous crop varieties that were going extinct.

This move has boosted food security, promoted cultural heritage, and encouraged sustainable farming. Women are stepping up, taking leadership roles in their communities. The project's keeping the momentum, empowering women and youth to preserve indigenous seeds, promoting biodiversity and food sovereignty.
