December 17 was the International Day to End Violence against S*x Workers. We came together to remember those we have lost and stand in solidarity with; those who continue to face harm, stigma and discrimination.

Tithandizane FSW continues to renew her commitment to the on-going struggle for decriminalization of s*x work coupled with the implementation of a comprehensive human rights based approach. We continue to ensure access to justice and legal protection, challenging stigma and discrimination as well as access to health and social services.

Today marks the International Day to End Violence Against S*x Workers, a day created by s*x workers in the wake of a brutal series of murders in the US in 2003. Since then, it has been a moment to confront the violence, stigma, and discrimination s*x workers face every day, and to demand a world where their rights are respected and upheld.

S*x workers are disproportionately targeted by hate crimes and s*xual violence. Global data shows that 45โ€“75% of s*x workers experience workplace violence during their lifetime โ€“ and we know that criminalisation only increases the risks.

But s*x workers, like everyone else, deserve protection and access to services that support rather than blame. This why Tithandizane FSW working with fellow female s*x workers and s*x workers Activist pushes for safety, dignity, and non-judgmental care towards Female S*x Workers in hard-to-reach rural areas.

The year 2025 tested the resilience of communities and organizations working on HIV prevention in Malawi. Global funding reductionsโ€”particularly cuts to HIV programmingโ€”placed immense pressure on grassroots services, disproportionately affecting the most marginalized. In this challenging context, Tithandizane Female S*x Workers (Tithandizane FSW) remained steadfast in its commitment to ensure that female s*x workers (FSWs) in hard-to-reach areas of Makanjira were not left behind. This project focused on restoring access to life-saving HIV education, prevention tools, and supportive linkages to care through community-led, rights-based approaches.

โ€ข Increase accurate HIV/AIDS knowledge among FSWs in hard-to-reach rural settings.
โ€ข Improve access to HIV prevention services, including condoms, lubricants, and referrals for testing and treatment.
โ€ข Reduce stigma and fear associated with HIV services through peer-led education.
โ€ข Strengthen community-level support systems to promote sustained HIV prevention behaviors.

Peer-Led Education Sessions: Trained peer educators delivered regular, small-group sessions covering HIV transmission, prevention options, ART adherence, and STI prevention.
โ€ข Community Outreach & Mobile Engagement: Outreach teams reached FSWs at hotspots, markets, and informal work settings, ensuring information and prevention commodities were accessible where women live and work.
โ€ข Distribution of Prevention Materials: Condoms and lubricants were distributed consistently, accompanied by demonstrations and counseling on correct and consistent use.
โ€ข Referral and Linkage Support: Participants were supported to access HIV testing, treatment, and SRHR services at nearby health facilities, including follow-ups to reduce loss to care.
โ€ข Stigma Reduction Dialogues: Community conversations with local leaders and stakeholders helped address discrimination and promote safer, more supportive environments.

โ€ข Improved Knowledge & Confidence: Participants demonstrated increased understanding of HIV prevention and greater confidence in negotiating safer s*x.
โ€ข Expanded Reach in Hard-to-Reach Areas: Despite logistical barriers, the project successfully reached FSWs who previously had little to no access to services.
โ€ข Strengthened Peer Networks: Peer educators emerged as trusted sources of information and support, enhancing sustainability beyond the project period.
โ€ข Increased Service Uptake: Referrals contributed to higher uptake of HIV testing and improved continuity of care among participants.

โ€ข Funding Constraints: Reduced external funding limited the scale of activities. Tithandizane FSW adapted by prioritizing peer-led, low-cost interventions and leveraging community solidarity.
โ€ข Geographic Barriers: Poor roads and long distances required flexible scheduling and mobile outreach strategies.
โ€ข Stigma and Discrimination: Persistent stigma initially hindered engagement; ongoing trust-building and confidentiality assurances helped mitigate this challenge.

โ€ข Community ownership and peer leadership are essential for reaching marginalized populations effectively.
โ€ข Flexible, mobile service delivery is critical in rural and hard-to-reach contexts.
โ€ข Sustained HIV prevention requires integration of education, commodities, and psychosocial supportโ€”especially during funding instability.

The Empowering Female S*x Workers in Hard-to-Reach Areas with HIV/AIDS Education and Prevention project demonstrated that even in times of funding uncertainty, community-driven approaches can protect lives and dignity. Tithandizane FSW closes 2025 with renewed commitment to advocacy, resource mobilization, and partnerships to scale and sustain HIV prevention for the most vulnerable. Building on the lessons of this year, the organization will continue to champion inclusive, rights-based health servicesโ€”ensuring that no woman is left behind, regardless of where she lives or works.

2025 has been a year of resilience, hope, and transformation. At Tithandizane Female S*x Workers Organization, we believe that every child deserves the chance to learn, play, and dreamโ€”no matter where they are born or how remote their community may be. Through our sports and education project, we reached the most vulnerable children in hard-to-reach rural areas, turning challenges into opportunities and neglected spaces into centers of growth.

Renovated learning spaces: We restored dilapidated classrooms, repaired pit latrines, and renovated community and school grounds, creating safe and dignified environments for children.

Access to education: School fees and essential supplies were provided to the most vulnerable children, ensuring that poverty and distance did not stand in the way of their education.

Sports for empowerment: By revitalizing playgrounds and sports facilities, we gave children not only a place to play but also a platform to build confidence, teamwork, and resilience.

This year reminded us that change is possible even in the hardest-to-reach corners of Malawi. Every renovated classroom tells a story of hope. Every child who received school supplies represents a future leader. Every playground echoes with laughter that once was silenced by neglect.

We also learned that partnerships and community ownership are key. By working hand-in-hand with local leaders, parents, and schools, we ensured that our interventions were not just projectsโ€”but lasting investments in dignity, equity, and opportunity.

My name is Everyn Chipao. For ten years, my office after sunset has been the bustling, noisy, and alive corridors of Mpirisi Market in TA Makanjira. I am 33 years old, and I am a s*x worker. But when the morning sun washes over the same market, you will find me at a different post: behind a small, vibrant stall of red tomatoes and pungent onions. This is my other office, my daytime enterprise.

This life chose me not out of a lack of dreams, but out of a fierce determination to turn my dreams into reality. A decade ago, with two small mouths to feed and no other options in sight, I walked into this market after dark with a heavy heart. The shame was a cloak I wore every night. But I soon realized that the coins and notes I earned were not just paper and metal; they were school fees for my son and daughter, they were medicine, they were our roof. This work, which so many look down upon, became the foundation of my childrenโ€™s future.

The path was never smooth. I have known the taste of fear and the sting of violence. There was a time when a client saw my 'no' as a challenge. He left me bruised and broken. For weeks, I felt powerless, thinking this was the price I had to pay.

Then, I found Tithandizane female for S*x Workers (TFSW). They did not come with pity; they came with power. They taught us that our rights as human beings do not vanish when the sun goes down. They gave us hotline numbers, taught us to assert our boundaries, and helped me see that I am not a victim, but a survivor.

With this new-found confidence, I decided to build a new pillar for my life. Using some of my savings, I started a small tomato and onion stall. It began as a way to earn an income during the daylight hours, but it became something more. It became a place of connection with my community. The same market women who would glance away from me at night now haggle with me cheerfully over the price of onions. They call me "Trader Everyn." My children now proudly say their mother is a businesswoman in the market.

There is no conflict between the woman who sells vegetables by day and the one who works by night. Both are me. Both are acts of provision and love. The tomatoes and onions represent my planning and my growth, while my night work represents the raw resilience that got me here.

Today, I move between my two worlds with my head held high. I am a respected figure among the other women in both spaces. I share what I learned from TFSWโ€”I tell them, "Know your worth. You have the right to be safe, to plan, and to build."

My two children are my greatest pride. They see a mother who works tirelessly, day and night. They have never wanted for anything essential. That is the success story I measure my life by.

I am Everyn Chipao. I am a s*x worker. I am a tomato vendor. I am a survivor. I am a mother. And I am proud. From the dusk of my past to the dawn of my future, I have built a life of dignity, one tomato, one decision, and one brave night at a time

On 4th December, Tithandizane proudly took part in the district launch of the 16 Days of Activism at St. Augustin 3 Primary School grounds in Mangochi. This event marked a crucial platform for amplifying our message that:

Female s*x workers deserve protection both offline and online.

Digital platforms must not become spaces of violence, blackmail, or discrimination.

Rural women, especially s*x workers, must be equipped and empowered to defend themselves digitally.

Our presence demonstrated leadership, courage, and our commitment to shaping national conversations around digital safety, human rights, and equality.

We began the 16 Days of Activism with International AIDS Day on 1st December, commemorated with vital support from the Mercury Phoenix Trust.

This day reminded us that:

Access to health is a human right.

Female s*x workers continue to face heightened vulnerability to HIV due to inequality, stigma, and exclusion.

Our community must have access to accurate information, testing, treatment, and non-discriminatory health services.

Through outreach, testimonies, and dialogue, we reinforced hope and strengthened the shared journey towards an HIV-free generation.

On International Human Rights Day, we celebrated progress while acknowledging the work ahead.
The day reaffirmed:

That s*x workersโ€™ rights are human rights.

That no woman should face violence โ€” physical, verbal, economic, or digital โ€” because of her work or identity.

That inclusion, justice, and equality must guide Malawiโ€™s path forward.

We used this day to promote healing, solidarity, and empowerment across our community.

Raised awareness on digital gender violence

Supported survivors

Engaged community leaders

Educated young women and s*x workers on their rights

Strengthened collaboration with other activists, service providers, and district GBV structures

Our work continues beyond these 16 days. Violence does not end today โ€” and neither does our fight.

Advocate for digital justice

Empower rural s*x workers to rise above discrimination, violence, and exclusion

S*x workers remain one of the most vulnerable groups when it comes to repressive and restrictive law enforcement exercises. S*x workers continues to suffer from untold messeries when it comes to cyberbullying, s*x workers are the ones that suffer most in hands of police under enforcement of police Act, and s*x workers organization suffer most when NGORA is enforcing Non-governmental Organization Act. It is therefore, imperative, urgent and non-negotiable to call for review of such restrictive and barbaric laws so that s*x workers like any other person enjoys full spectrum of Human rights.

Today, we raise our voices louder than ever. As Tithandizane Female S*x Workers, we stand at the frontline of the fight to protect, promote, defend, and advance the rights of the most vulnerable female s*x workers living in the hard-to-reach rural areas of Chiphole, Mangochi. Our struggle is real, our resilience is powerful, and our dignity is non-negotiable.

On 4th December 2025, we proudly took part in the 16 Days of Activism commemoration held at St. Augustine 3 Primary School in Mangochi, under the national theme:
๐ŸŒ โ€œUnite to End Digital Gender Violence in Malawi.โ€

Digital platforms should be a source of opportunityโ€”not another space where women and marginalized groups face abuse, threats, harassment, and exposure. Yet female s*x workers in rural Malawi experience some of the most severe forms of online violence, fueled by stigma, discrimination, and lack of digital protection.

We refuse to be silent.
We refuse to be erased.
We refuse to be violatedโ€”online or offline.

This year, we stood with community leaders, girls, women, activists, and partners to call for:
โœจ Safe digital spaces for all
โœจ Stronger laws and accountability for perpetrators
โœจ Community awareness to end stigma and discrimination
โœจ Empowerment of rural women and girls with digital skills and protection tools

The 16 Days of Activism is not just a campaignโ€”it is a movement, a reminder that every woman deserves respect, dignity, safety, and freedom.

To every female s*x worker in Chiphole and across Malawi:
Your rights matter. Your voice matters. Your life matters.
We stand with you. We fight for you. We will not stop until every form of violence ends.

โœจ 16 Days of Activism 2025 โ€“ Malawi โœจ

At Tithandizane Female S*x Workers, we stand firm in protecting, promoting, defending, and advancing the rights of the most vulnerable women in hard-to-reach rural areas of Chiphole, Mangochi.

On 4th December 2025, we joined voices at St. Augustin 3 Primary School, Mangochi, under the theme: โ€œUnite to End Digital Gender Violence in Malawi.โ€

๐Ÿ“ข Digital spaces must be safe for ALL women โ€” including female s*x workers who face double layers of stigma and violence. Online harassment, exploitation, and silencing are violations of human rights.

We call on communities, leaders, and allies to rise with us:

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ End digital gender-based violence.

๐Ÿ“ฒ Create safe online spaces for women and girls.

โœŠ Stand in solidarity with marginalized groups, including female s*x workers in rural Malawi.

Together, we can break the silence, dismantle stigma, and build a Malawi where every woman โ€” regardless of who she is or where she lives โ€” can thrive with dignity and safety.
