It was an absolute pleasure hosting the Malawi Safe Water Now Policy Colloquium discussing the progress that the country has made in the achievement of SDG 6 on access to safe drinking water for all alongside the goals set out in the Water and sanitation policies of the country.

One lesson learnt is that Malawi has an abundance of water resources yet the per Capita access by citizens is way below the required standards noting that Malawi citizens are heavily thirsty. The colloquium discussed progress made, existing challenges and came up with key recommendations Chief of which included;

1. Strengthening Government’s coordination and regulation on the drilling of boreholes for standardization of and monitoring of the water aquifers.
2. Align and harmonize the coordination efforts in projects by various partners to efficiently spread the investment opportunities to reach more people and avoid duplications.
3. Strengthen sustainability channels/plans with partner projects.
4. Prioritize sustainable investment in the WASH sector.
5. Include Faith Based Organizations in the WASH policy conversation as part of the institutional framework

The safe water policy colloquium was organized by Evidence Action Malawi with the participation of the key WASH partners, Government officials from the Ministry of Water and Sanitation, Ministry of Health, District Governments and members of Parliarment. A key milestone in breaking down policy and legislative discourse in the most important Water development agenda for Malawi.

Illegal land grab!

66 acres within the gazetted and protected Oloolua Forest has been subdivided and allocated to 41 individuals and companies.

Friends of Oloolua Forest (FoOF) and Public Interest Litigation and Advocacy for the Environment (PILAE) have partnered to address this matter through the courts, seeing this as the only permanent way of protecting the Oloolua Forest.

A total of 5 cases have been filed at the Environment and Land Court in Nairobi to challenge these 41 titles, and have the land reverted back to the protected public forest.

FoOF urgently calls for your help to Protect this forest, and raise funds to assist with litigation and advocacy.

Why This Matters:
· Oloolua Forest is a gazetted public forest, not for sale or private development
· It's a crucial green space for the community and wildlife
· Should this be allowed it will set a dangerous precedent for other protected areas and forests across Kenya

How You Can Help:
Donate, whatever the amount, to directly help fund our legal battle to save Oloolua.

This infographic by 𝐊𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐨 titled "8 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐨𝐧 𝐓𝐲𝐩𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠" which outlines different methods of carbon pricing used to regulate and reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

𝘏𝘦𝘳𝘦'𝘴 𝘢 𝘥𝘦𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘭𝘦𝘥 𝘴𝘶𝘮𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩 𝘵𝘺𝘱𝘦 𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘥:

𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧 𝐓𝐚𝐱 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐞:
Governments impose a tax per ton of CO2/CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent) emitted, effectively making organizations pay for their emissions.

𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐭 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐞:
Price for CO2e permits traded in regulatory/compliance markets, allowing organizations to compensate for emissions that exceed set limits. This system also rewards organizations that reduce their emissions.

𝐎𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐞:
The internal cost an organization is willing to pay to offset or reduce their emissions, influenced by internal goals, financial strategies, ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) motivations, and government policies.

𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐟𝐞𝐫 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐞:
Price agreed upon between a producer/host nation and a buyer nation for the transfer of CO2/CO2e credits to offset national carbon emissions.

𝐕𝐂𝐌 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐭 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐞:
The price of carbon credits in the Voluntary Carbon Market (VCM), which are tradable certificates representing an offset of one ton of CO2 or CO2e from the atmosphere. The price varies based on the type of offset projects and demand.

𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐞:
The practical price to perform activities aimed at reducing, protecting, or removing CO2/CO2e from the atmosphere. This price includes material, labor, overhead, and environmental uplift costs associated with the offset project.

𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐞:
The financial investment required to stimulate the development and adoption of renewable technologies and low-carbon solutions, contributing to economic growth.

𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐞:
Represents the costs that individuals and nations will incur from the negative effects of climate change due to anthropogenic CO2/CO2e emissions. These costs are associated with events like heatwaves, droughts, sea-level rise, loss of biodiversity, and more.

The infographic effectively summarizes these diverse carbon pricing mechanisms, providing a concise overview of how financial and regulatory strategies are utilized to combat climate change.

Profits are like happiness. The more directly you pursue happiness, the less likely you are to achieve it. Profits are best achieved by not making them the primary goal of the business. They are the outcomes when companies do business with a sense of higher purpose. Find your higher purpose.
