It was an absolute pleasure hosting the Malawi Safe Water Now Policy Colloquium discussing the progress that the country has made in the achievement of SDG 6 on access to safe drinking water for all alongside the goals set out in the Water and sanitation policies of the country.
One lesson learnt is that Malawi has an abundance of water resources yet the per Capita access by citizens is way below the required standards noting that Malawi citizens are heavily thirsty. The colloquium discussed progress made, existing challenges and came up with key recommendations Chief of which included;
1. Strengthening Government’s coordination and regulation on the drilling of boreholes for standardization of and monitoring of the water aquifers.
2. Align and harmonize the coordination efforts in projects by various partners to efficiently spread the investment opportunities to reach more people and avoid duplications.
3. Strengthen sustainability channels/plans with partner projects.
4. Prioritize sustainable investment in the WASH sector.
5. Include Faith Based Organizations in the WASH policy conversation as part of the institutional framework
The safe water policy colloquium was organized by Evidence Action Malawi with the participation of the key WASH partners, Government officials from the Ministry of Water and Sanitation, Ministry of Health, District Governments and members of Parliarment. A key milestone in breaking down policy and legislative discourse in the most important Water development agenda for Malawi.
