CorpsAfrica/Malawi This is the official page for CorpsAfrica Malawi, we provide volunteering opportunities for recent African graduates in communities across Malawi.

Some of our core values are as follows:

Locals helping locals
We believe that qualified Africans can be part of the solution in their own countries. Our volunteers relocate to remote communities in their own countries for one year and begin to fully integrate by learning local customs, participating in day-to-day activities, and becoming trusted members of the community. Listening and empowering
We stress the importance of listening - our volunteers lead change by engaging people in conversations and facilitating community meetings to identify and address changing and complex local needs in education, health, small business development, urban planning and infrastructure. We believe that development efforts are most effective when “demand driven” – giving women, men and youth at the community level the opportunity to identify what needs to be done and to take the lead in doing it. Collaboration
Our volunteers serve as liaisons between their communities and the outside world. CorpsAfrica is uniquely positioned to collaborate with a wide range of Development Partners. These Development Partners include NGOs, development-related businesses, government officials, academics, social entrepreneurs and others who share their expertise and assist the volunteers with their project implementation. Monitoring and evaluation
We think that no effort is complete without thorough monitoring and evaluation. Before beginning their service, volunteers are taught the tools needed to evaluate and monitor their communities. After their service, volunteers begin measuring the project impact on the community or targeted population. CorpsAfrica also measure the impact on the lives of the volunteers that graduate from the program, who will have learned through hands-on experience the critical issues of community development. Accountability and transparency
We want to show our Development Partners, the targeted communities and all interested outside parties what we're up to and be held accountable for everything we do. It keeps us motivated and encourages us to be the best that we can be.

In Benga 2 Community, Nkhotakota District, limited livelihood opportunities were affecting households’ ability to generate and grow income.

Rather than starting with a solution, CorpsAfrica/Malawi Volunteer Tawonga Gausi worked with community members to understand the challenge and explore opportunities through a Human-Centered Design and community-led approach.

They identified pig farming as an enterprise they could develop using their own resources, skills and collective effort.

The community then invested MWK 1.7 million and constructed three pigsties to support the project.

The initiative directly reached 43 community members, including 30 women and 30 young people, with one woman living with a disability also participating.

Participants received training in pig management, while 24 pigs were vaccinated to strengthen animal health and reduce risks to the enterprise.

The training also produced a measurable change in knowledge. Among the 40 participants assessed, average scores increased from 10% before training to 65.3% afterwards.

And the vision goes beyond the first group of beneficiaries.

The community plans to use a pass-on model, to expand pig ownership to more households, supported by continued veterinary monitoring.

On 27 September, four members of the CorpsAfrica/Malawi Alumni Association joined climate advocates, community-based organizations, and nonprofits at the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre for a river cleanup organized by the Lilongwe Wildlife Conservation Trust.

Through the CorpsAfrica Green Initiative, our alumni joined the effort to remove waste, protect our water resources, and promote environmental stewardship.

Because protecting our environment is not a one-person job. It takes people coming together, taking action, and caring for the places we all call home.

Putting communities at the centre of resource mobilisation.

CorpsAfrica/Malawi facilitated a two-day Human-Centred Design Ideation & Prioritisation Workshop for the Resource Mobilisation Initiative Funding Window (RMIF), bringing together CSSF grant partners, community representatives and key stakeholders from across Malawi.

Held in Lilongwe on 15 to 16 September, the workshop provided a space for participants to build on ideas generated through earlier sessions and collectively identify practical, community-rooted approaches to sustainable resource mobilisation.

From leveraging local resources and building partnerships with businesses to strengthening social enterprises, the sessions focused on shaping ideas that can support resilient, locally led development.

Through human-centred design, collaboration and shared learning, participants are helping shape the next phase of the RMIF funding window.

Monitoring is not just about collecting data, it is about knowing whether a project is working, who it is reaching, and what needs to change.

During our Cohort 10 Volunteer Community Based Training, our Monitoring & Evaluation team took trainees through practical M&E tools using real-life scenarios. They explored how to collect, track, and use information to understand progress and strengthen the initiatives they will facilitate with communities.

Because when we monitor well, we can learn, adapt, improve, and demonstrate impact.

Putting people at the centre of change.

A highlight from the Innovators Campus training with the Cohort 10 Volunteers and community members, a space for listening, learning, questioning, creating, and imagining what is possible together.

Human-Centered Design reminds us that meaningful development doesn’t begin with “What can we do for this community?” It begins with “What matters to the people who live here, and how can we work alongside them to create solutions?”

Through the Innovators Campus, Volunteers and community members explored how to look at challenges differently, uncover the experiences behind them, build on existing strengths, and turn locally identified ideas into action.

Because community-led development is not about designing solutions for people, it is about creating the space, tools, and relationships for people to design solutions for themselves.

When local knowledge meets curiosity, empathy, creativity, and collective action, innovation becomes something much more powerful: a pathway to ownership, and sustainable change.

From learning Chichewa, Tumbuka and discovering Malawian culture to laughing, playing and getting to know the people they’ll soon be working alongside, Cohort 10 is officially ready for the next chapter!

After completing their Language & Culture Training, our Exchange Volunteers came together with the CorpsAfrica/Malawi team for a fun-filled lunch and afternoon of games, connection and community.

Beyond the fun, the gathering was an opportunity for our Exchange Volunteers to get to know the CorpsAfrica/Malawi staff on a more, build relationships, and begin creating the connections that will support them throughout their service.

As they head into their communities, knowing the people behind the team and knowing that they have a team they can turn to for guidance, encouragement and support, will be an important part of their journey. Creating trust, opening lines of communication, and building a strong support network for the road ahead.

It was also a chance to celebrate how far they have come, and share in the excitement of what lies ahead.

Now, the real adventure begins.

On 4 September, CorpsAfrica/Malawi officially welcomed 97 young Volunteers into service during the Cohort 10 Swearing-In Ceremony at New Dawn Events Centre in Lilongwe.

Presided over by the Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, Hon. Alfred Gangata, MP, the ceremony marked the beginning of a new chapter for 69 female and 28 male Volunteers who have completed weeks of intensive Pre-Service Training.

Selected from 3,489 applicants, the group represents the 10th cohort of CorpsAfrica Volunteers in Malawi since 2016. This year’s cohort includes 9 Exchange Volunteers from across Africa and 8 Volunteers from the refugee community, strengthening our commitment to Pan-Africanism, inclusion and community-led development.

Over the next year, the they will serve across 8 districts, working alongside communities to design and implement locally led solutions using Human-Centered Design, Community-Led Development and Asset-Based Community Development.

Their ambition is bold: to contribute to creating 10,000 work opportunities, including at least 1,200 for people from the refugee community and opportunities for youth with disabilities.

The oath has been taken. The real work begins now.

As we carry on with our Community Based Training, we have been learning, reflecting, preparing, and challenging ourselves to think differently about what it means to serve. From understanding community needs and participation to exploring approaches that help communities identify and lead their own solutions, every session is designed to prepare our Cohort 10 trainees to serve.

Training isn’t only about what happens in the classroom. There are games that bring us together, conversations that continue during breaks, behind-the-scenes preparation, plenty of water breaks, laughter, and the small moments that make a group of Volunteers become a team.

Community-led development starts with listening, learning, and building trust. The past week has been one step in that journey.
